The Wuyang River Scenic Area is a national scenic area, a national AAA-level tourist attraction, and a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Wuyang River Scenic Area is centered around the Wuyang River, stretching through the national-level historical and cultural city of Zhenyuan, the county seat of Shibing, and the provincial-level historical and cultural town of Jiuzhou in Huangping. It unfolds along tributaries such as Xiaotang River and Shanmu River, covering a planned total area of 625 square kilometers with 10 scenic zones and 246 scenic spots. It was one of the second batch of national key scenic areas approved and announced by the State Council in 1988. It integrates natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and ethnic customs, serving as the hub of eastern Guizhou tourism.

The Wuyang River is divided into the Upper Wuyang and Lower Wuyang sections. The Upper Wuyang features the First Gorge, Roadless Gorge, Old Cave Gorge, and Guanyin Gorge, spanning approximately 50 kilometers and marked by the "Taoist Fishing" rock formation. The Lower Wuyang includes the Zhuge Gorge within Shibing County and the Dragon King Gorge, West Gorge, and East Gorge within Zhenyuan County, stretching 50 kilometers in total and marked by the "Peacock Spreading Its Tail" rock formation. The two sections each have distinct characteristics—Upper Wuyang is known for its mountains, while Lower Wuyang is famed for its gorges. The Upper Wuyang boasts vivid landscapes such as Twin Flying Waters, Water Moon Palace, and Widow Weeping for Her Husband. The Zhuge Gorge in the Lower Wuyang offers sights like the Burning of Red Cliffs and Gaobei Lake, featuring roaring rapids and turbulent shoals as well as serene, expansive lakes. The Dragon King Gorge, home to sights like One-Line Sky, Dragon King Palace, Peacock Peak, and Triple-Tiered Waterfall, is characterized by towering peaks, winding waterways, and strikingly lifelike rock formations along the banks, such as Human Face Rock, Sleeping Dragon Rock, and Granny Carrying a Basket. The East Gorge area, with attractions like Dragon Pool, Squid Cave, Rhino Pond, and Thousand-Layer Rocks, is dotted with numerous shoals and bizarre rocks. Along the Xiangjian River, landmarks such as Welcoming Pigeons, Three Sword Peaks, Three Beauties at the Gate, Monkey Emerging from the Cave, Tang Monk and Disciples Peaks, Lion Looking Back, and Golden Rooster Crowing at the Heavenly Gate are exquisitely lifelike, brimming with poetic charm.

Wuyang River Scenic Area Transportation

Public Transport: The Wuyang River originates in Weng’an, passes through Huangping, Shibing, and Zhenyuan, and flows into the Yuan River in Hunan. Visitors can take a bus from Guiyang Gymnasium Long-Distance Bus Station to Zhenyuan (via Shibing) for 43 RMB.

Self-Drive: Travel 9 kilometers west along the river to Upper Wuyang, or 25 kilometers east to Upper Wuyang. YunTai Mountain is 13 kilometers from the county seat, Shanmu River is 14 kilometers away, and Heichong is 20 kilometers from the county seat.
