Within the Loess lies at the junction of three scenic areas—Yuntai Mountain, Shanmu River, and Heichong. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing a body of water on one, it was once home to a large village community, according to local elders. The settlement produced notable figures such as Tao Taishi and Pi Taishi, but an epidemic in the area eventually led to the village’s demise. Behind Within the Loess, there is a stone-paved mountain path called “Yuliang Back.” It is currently the only visible relic of the area’s ancient inhabitants. Only one meter wide, the path has slopes on both sides resembling the curve of a fish’s back, presumably designed for drainage. The cobblestones were all carried up manually from the mountain foot. However, it remains unclear just how long ago those industrious ancestors lived here, as the once fertile fields are now overgrown with thorny thickets, leaving only faint traces to stir the imagination…
