Heichong Scenic Area

Heichong Scenic Area, located on the edge of a fault line formed by crustal movement. Intense surface erosion has created spectacular landscapes such as canyons, peak clusters, narrow gullies, mountain passes, sheer cliffs, impact pits, and clear pools, forming a karst landform of countless mountains and valleys.

"Chong" means valley, and this area is named Heichong (Black Valley) because its dense vegetation blocks out the sunlight. Heichong is not only an excellent spot to view sea of clouds, watch sunrises, admire mountain flowers, and overlook the vast valleys and mountains. Major attractions in the surrounding area include: Jiaoding Mountain, Daluojia, Xiaoluojia, Dayanfang, Waiyingtai, and the former battlefield site of the Sixth Red Army Corps at Heichong. There are also 16 other scenic spots. The area covers approximately 65 square kilometers. For sightseeing, visitors can explore the four scenic zones divided by mountain regions: Jiaoding Mountain, Luohanchong, Heichong, and Mahuangchong, in sequence. These zones are adjacent to one another, each featuring unique landscapes, including karst scenery, mountain scenery, forest scenery, bamboo forest scenery, bird-watching scenery, monkey-watching scenery, celestial phenomena scenery, sea of clouds scenery, canyon scenery, low mountain scenery, river scenery, fish-watching scenery, and waterfall scenery—totaling over 20 types. The diverse terrain gives rise to numerous atmospheric landscapes. Within a year, a single day, and across the four seasons, from dawn to dusk, the sea of clouds and misty skies present ever-changing, unpredictable vistas.

There are two main routes to tour the Heichong scenery: One route goes from Didao Yue — Daluojia — Xiaoluojia — Jiaoding Mountain — Owl Ridge to the Heichong Mountain Village; the other route is from Yuntai Mountain — Shaolong Bay — Xiang’er Rock — Yuntaigou — Paradise to the Heichong Mountain Village. After arriving at the Heichong Mountain Village, follow the mountain trail up to Datun Shang and Waiyingtai to enjoy the sea of clouds and watch the sunrise. Head west via Daqing, Gunlaopo, Chong’ao, Dishuiyan, and Doulvyang to Wulutang. This area features deep forests and scenic views at every step. Especially noteworthy is Dishuiyan (Dripping Water Rock), which is steep and precipitous. It has one slope that can be climbed, while three sides are sheer cliffs as if hewn by axes, making the summit view both breathtaking and eerie. Who would believe that this very rock, Dishuiyan, also played a remarkable role in history?
