Guizhou Wolong Pool

Originally named Wenglong Pool.

Wolong Pool is part of the Xiaoqikong Scenic Area. In winter, the water is very calm, creating clear reflections, and due to the geological conditions, it appears bluish-green. The viewing platform at this attraction is relatively small and can get quite crowded. Downstream of the pool, there is a waterfall.

It is the outlet of the karst underground river — Wolong River. On the surface, it merely appears as the headwaters of the Wolong River. In recent years, a dam has been built here to divert water for hydropower generation, which then flows into the Xiangshui River, making it the main water source for both rivers. The underground river gushes out from the bottom of the cliff, leaving no visible trace on the surface of the pool. Only the waterfall-like surge over the dam and the ceaseless flow of water in the channels outside the pool make you feel the Wolong River surging beneath the surface. The area around the pool is lined with peculiar rocks and ancient trees, densely forested. Outside the pool, the roaring sound of water and misty rain envelop the surroundings, while high mountains encircle the area, making the pool seem like a deep abyss beneath the earth. Even during floods, the surface of the pool remains as calm as a mirror.

Transportation

By bus:

There are shuttle buses from Libo County Bus Station to the Greater and Lesser Qikong areas, running from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, every 15 minutes, with a fare of 9 yuan.

By taxi:

The starting fare for taxis in Libo County is 4 yuan. You can negotiate a fixed price with the driver for a private car to the Greater and Lesser Qikong areas. However, Libo County is quite small, and walking is usually sufficient unless you have specific needs. Taxis may be a good option if you are in a larger group (more than 6 people) or want to share a ride.

By private car hire:

Opting for a private car hire is especially recommended, particularly if you’re going to Maolan, where self-driving or hiring a car is necessary. Typically, a 7-seater van with a driver to Maolan starts at 300 yuan per day, and round-trip transportation to the Greater and Lesser Qikong areas starts at 150 yuan per day.

Xiaoqikong Scenic Area combo ticket: 110 yuan in summer;

90 yuan in winter (students receive a 50% discount in both summer and winter). The scenic area’s sightseeing tram costs 40 yuan, and insurance is 5 yuan. The Mandarin Duck Lake iron boat ride is 120 yuan (for up to 6 people) or 30 yuan per person.
