The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), commonly referred to as "UESTC," is located in Chengdu, known as the "Land of Abundance." It is directly administered by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and is jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government. UESTC is listed among the "211 Project," "985 Project," and has been selected for the national "2011 Plan," "111 Plan," and "Excellence in Engineering Education Program." It is also a member of the "Two Circuits and One Mail" group. The university has a graduate school and is a comprehensive, research-oriented national key university with a focus on electronic information science and technology, emphasizing engineering while integrating science and engineering, and coordinating the development of science, engineering, management, and liberal arts. It is hailed as the "vanguard of China's electronic colleges and universities."

Originally named Chengdu Institute of Radio Engineering, UESTC was established in 1956 under the personal arrangement of Premier Zhou Enlai, through the merger of telecommunications engineering-related programs from Jiaotong University (now Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiaotong University), Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University), and South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology). In 1960, it was listed as a national key higher education institution by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China; in 1961, it was designated as one of the seven national defense industry institutions. In 1988, it was renamed the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. In 1997, it was included in the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities. In 2000, it was transferred from the former Ministry of Information Industry to the administration of the Ministry of Education. In 2001, it joined the ranks of the national "985 Project" key construction universities.

According to the university’s official website as of April 2016, UESTC has three campuses: Qingshuihe, Shahe, and Jiulidi, covering a total area of over 5,000 acres. The university consists of 24 colleges (departments) and offers 59 undergraduate majors. There are more than 33,000 full-time students, including over 12,000 doctoral and master's degree students. The faculty includes more than 3,800 staff members, among whom over 2,100 are full-time teachers, including 445 professors.
