Luyi Mountain Scenic Area

It is situated 2 kilometers south of Lucheng City, spanning 25 square kilometers, and rises to an elevation of 1,310 meters. The area boasts undulating peaks, dense pine and cypress forests, green meadows, and fluttering butterflies, making it one of the Eight Celebrated Scenic Spots.　

Legend has it that during the Warring States period, Qin Yue from Luchun Village in the State of Qi, who practiced medicine in the State of Zhao under the name Bian Que, once passed through here on his way to treat Zhao Jianzi, the ruler of the Jin State. He was known for diagnosing patients’ internal organs and once saved a life using astragalus, hence the mountain was named after Luyi (Luyi being another name for Bian Que). Inspired by the legends of the divine physician Bian Que, various structures have been built here over the dynasties in his honor. In ancient times, there were temples on the mountain peak dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the Three Sovereigns, and various deities of medicine. These were destroyed during the Japanese invasion of China. Today, three Bian Que caves built in the 26th year of the Guangxu reign (1900) at the mountain pass still remain. Carved on the nearby plaques is the couplet: “In the south, a peerless scenic wonder of Ying State; in the north, the foremost peak of the Taihang Mountains.”

In recent years, restoration work has begun. Statues of Bian Que have been erected, walls and staircases repaired, and new structures such as the Welcome Pavilion and Butterfly Pavilion have been added, making it a great destination for city visitors to escape the summer heat and enjoy panoramic views. A new look at Luyi Mountain reveals what seems like a celestial paradise.
