Leizu Mausoleum

Leizu Mausoleum is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Leizu Mausoleum (tomb) is located on Qinglong Mountain in Jinqi Town, Yanting County. It was built well before the Qin and Han dynasties and serves as a site where people remember ancient times, honor their ancestors, and pay tribute to Leizu. The restored and rebuilt Leizu Mausoleum is designed in the shape of the Eight Trigrams (Bagua), built against the mountain with three sides exposed and five sides concealed. The tomb has a side length of 24.95 meters, symbolizing the 24 solar terms and the supreme dignity of "nine five." The diameter of the mausoleum is 60 meters and its height is 190 meters, making it the foremost mausoleum of China’s female ancestors. In 1993, Yang Chao, a former senior Sichuan provincial leader and scholar, inscribed the original tombstone with the characters “Leizu Tomb,” which is situated at the center of the mausoleum. In front of the mausoleum stands a stele pavilion, 14 meters wide and 9 meters high, designed in the structure of the "Kun" trigram from the Bagua. The stele itself stands 2.8 meters tall, 1.2 meters wide, and 0.3 meters thick. The three ancient seal script characters for “Leizu Mausoleum” were handwritten in Yanting by the renowned overseas Chinese calligrapher Mr. Qiu Chengguang from Singapore.

The incense burner in front of the stele pavilion is also a uniquely crafted stone dragon-and-phoenix relief incense burner in the country, measuring 7 meters in length, 1.5 meters in width, and 2.5 meters in height.

The tomb area's platform is semi-circular, with one circular money-burning stove on each side, and a memorial archway positioned at the center. In front of the archway lies a Sacred Way leading directly to the starting platform of Leizu Lake. The Sacred Way stretches 400 meters in length and 20 meters in width, featuring a lower platform, a middle platform, and an upper platform. The platforms are connected by 12 sets of steps, symbolizing the 12 months of the year. The number of steps in each set corresponds to the days in each lunar month, arranged according to the “Earthly Branches” sequence, with carvings of the twelve zodiac animals on each step set. On either side of the Sacred Way stand 56 totem poles, representing China’s 56 ethnic groups. The middle platform is designed as a square Nine-Palace Grand Altar, with sides 90 meters long, divided into nine square sections, each 30 meters per side, varying in height to signify the Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams. At the front of the main platform is a 20-meter-high relief wall carved with the image of Leizu. Four stone-carved gates are placed in the southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest directions, representing the four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The main platform is primarily used for large-scale sacrificial ceremonies and can accommodate several thousand people.

One bell tower and one drum tower will be constructed at the mountain spurs on either side of the Leizu Mausoleum (tomb), allowing the sounds of morning bells and evening drums to echo through the valley, evoking a deep sense of reverence.
