The Ancient Architectural Complex of Gaofeng Mountain

The Gaofeng Mountain Ancient Architectural Complex is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The ancient buildings of Gaofeng Mountain were first built in the Tang Dynasty, while the extant structures mainly date from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republican period. The complex covers a total construction area of more than 5,200 square meters, comprising four major sections: the Main Temple, the Tomb and Stele Pavilion of Wang Yuqing, the Tomb and Stele Pavilion of Fan Yunfeng, as well as the Fortress Walls and Gates. The Main Temple, built during the late Qing and early Republican periods, spans an area of over 3,900 square meters. It follows the mountain’s contours and is arranged across two or three vertical levels, consisting of structures such as the Mountain Gate, Three Pure Ones Hall, Laojun Hall, Wenchang Hall, Guest Hall, and various dormitories on each level. The layered pavilions form a complex, ingeniously interconnected layout that includes hidden rooms, secret passages, partition walls, overhead bridges, and overlapping stairways—making for a spectacular sight. Both the Wang and Fan family tombs and their stele pavilions are Republican-era constructions. The Fortress Walls and Gates have undergone limited modifications, though the exact construction era remains unclear. The initial architectural layout and original forms of the Gaofeng Mountain structures have been remarkably well-preserved, serving as valuable resources for the study of ancient architecture.

The architectural decoration of the Gaofeng Mountain buildings is rich and diverse in theme. Structural elements such as bracket arms, transverse beams, spandrel brackets, and column bases mostly feature carvings. A variety of carving techniques are used, including low-relief, high-relief, and round sculpture, with the latter being dominant. Many elements retain their original forms and exhibit exquisite craftsmanship. The stele pavilion of Fan Yunfeng also houses 23 ink-and-wash murals covering a total area of 11.7 square meters, all dating from the Republican Era. These murals hold significant value for studies in arts and crafts.

Over 40 stone plaques, couplets, and inscribed stelae from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republican Era are preserved at Gaofeng Mountain. These artifacts serve as important references for research in epigraphy and calligraphy, poetry and parallel prose, and religious culture. Their historical texts and writings are also vital documents for the study of local history.
