Wangzi Building

The Wangzi Building is a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.

The "Wangzi Building" is an ancient structure laid out in the shape of the Chinese character 王 (meaning 'king'), located within the campus of Yuechi Middle School in Sichuan Province. Originally built in 1908, the building is an iconic landmark of Yuechi Middle School and has been designated as a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.

The Wangzi Building is located on Waidong Street in Yuechi County. It was built in 1908 and has a history of over a century. It was constructed under the supervision of Luo Yaoqin, a local from Yuechi, with a joint donation of 1,500 taels of silver from two local gentry members. Initially serving as a venue for teaching silkworm breeding and silk reeling, it was converted into an educational facility in 1922 — the predecessor of today’s Yuechi Middle School — and is now used by the school.

In the middle section of Waidong Street in Yuechi County, one is greeted by a pair of antique bronze-colored doors, above which hangs a plaque engraved with four golden Chinese characters: “Yuechi Middle School.” The central beam of the school gate bears the inscription: “Summer, the 3rd year of the Xuantong Emperor; Supervisor: Liu Dingyuan; Construction Supervisor: Luo Shiqiong; Recipient: Wen Kang Fan Jian.” For many years, students of Yuechi Middle School have passed through this gate and walked along a corridor about 50 meters long to enter the school.

As the school continued to expand, the Wangzi Building transitioned from being a teaching space to an administrative facility, and eventually became a preserved symbolic structure of the school. In 2012, it was listed as a Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.
