Mumen Scenic Area

Mumen Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Mumen Scenic Area is located at the northern edge of the Sichuan Basin, in Mumen Town, Wangcang County, at the junction of Wangcang, Nanjiang, and Cangxi counties. Historically known as “a single step across three counties,” the scenic area spans 6.73 square kilometers. It consists of the Memorial Park of the Mumen Military Conference of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area, the expansive Micang Mountain Ecological Tea Plantations, and Liushu Happy and Beautiful New Village Homestead, among other parts.

Mumen Temple, originally built during the Southern Liang Dynasty and later reconstructed in the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, is situated on the mountainside at an altitude of over 400 meters on South Qinglong Mountain. The temple is built along the hillside, facing south with its back to the north. Constructed using a post-and-lintel structure, it comprises the main hall, side rooms, and mountain gate, forming a quadrangle courtyard covering a land area of 3,375 square meters and a building area of 1,190 square meters. Today, the temple still preserves relics such as scripture-drying stones and Buddhist murals.

In late June 1933, after the Fourth Red Army shattered the enemy’s “Three-Pronged Encirclement,” to strengthen the Red Army and base construction, key political, military, and party leaders of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Revolutionary Base held the famous “Mumen Military Conference” at Mumen Temple in Wangcang. The conference decided to halt the internal “purge” campaign within the army, to expand and retrain the main Red Army forces, which led to the growth of the troops. The Mumen Conference was a historically significant meeting since the Fourth Red Army entered Sichuan, exerting far-reaching influence. As a result, Mumen Temple earned its place in history. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the government renovated the temple and established the “Revolutionary Cultural Relics Exhibition Room of the Mumen Conference Site of the Fourth Red Army” at the original conference site. The exhibition room displays inscriptions by proletarian revolutionaries such as Xu Xiangqian and Li Xiannian, as well as hundreds of revolutionary cultural relics from the Soviet Area at that time.

The Mumen Conference Memorial Hall displays hundreds of stone inscriptions by the Red Army and a plaque inscribed with “Mumen Conference Site” personally written by Xu Xiangqian. The Red Army New Village recreates scenes of mass meetings, battlefield mobilization gatherings held in various courtyards by the Red Army, and the logistical support tasks undertaken by local residents to aid the Red Army. Major attractions include the Red Army Canteen, Red Memory Corridor, and Red Farmhouse Restaurants. There are also sculptures such as the Women’s Independent Division Monument, the Horse-Tethering Stone Sculpture, and the “Global Communization” Stone Inscription.

Focusing on the cultivation of yellow tea and green tea, the area implements industrial poverty alleviation and has created the national geographical indication product — the “Micang Mountain” tea brand. The flourishing new tea culture adds luster and lays a foundation for the sustainable development of the tourist area. Additionally, tourism services derived from tea planting and cultivation, such as agritainment at Jinxiu Mountain Villa, the Tea Expo Garden, experiential sightseeing, and more, are thriving.

Liushu New Village in Mumen Town is a model among the 38 happy and beautiful new villages out of the 220 new village projects initiated in Wangcang County.

Mumen Town: Located on the southeastern edge of Wangcang County, Mumen Town borders cities and counties such as Bazhong, Nanjiang, and Cangxi. It covers an area of 53 square kilometers, with a population of 21,000, and governs 13 administrative villages and 1 neighborhood committee. The area features fertile land, abundant produce, convenient transportation, and a bustling market. It has the largest rural market in Wangcang and is known as the “Granary of Wangcang.” The Mumen Military Conference Exhibition Hall is listed as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit and is a renowned patriotic education base in the province.
