Site of the Red Army's Bloody Battle at Jianmen Pass
The Site of the Red Army's Bloody Battle at Jianmen Pass is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.
The Site of the Red Army's Bloody Battle at Jianmen Pass was completed in 2009 and includes the Monument to the Red Army’s Capture of Jianmen Pass, the Memorial Hall of the Red Army’s Capture of Jianmen Pass, statues of generals, and stone inscriptions. On April 2, 1935, after fierce fighting, the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army captured the strategically vital Jianmen Pass in northern Sichuan. The bloody battle at Jianmen Pass created a miracle in military history and is one of the famous battles of the Fourth Front Army. This site is a national patriotic education base and one of China’s 100 red tourism sites.
Jianmen Pass is one of China’s most renowned natural mountain passes. Located 15 kilometers south of Jiange County in Sichuan Province, it lies in the middle section where the Greater and Lesser Jian Mountains meet. Towering cliffs rise on both sides, and the peaks resemble swords, forming a gate-like gap between them—hence the name “Jianmen” (Sword Gate). It enjoys reputations such as “The Most Precipitous Pass Under Heaven,” “The First Pass Under Heaven,” and “The Gateway to Shu.”
The Jianmen Pass Scenic Area is located 10 kilometers south of Jiange County. Formerly known as Jiange, it served as a shield for northern Shu and the throat of the two Sichuan regions. It is an important pass along the ancient Shu Road through Jianmen, as well as the core area of the Jianmen Shu Road National Scenic Area and the main part of the Jianmen Pass National Forest Park.
Jianmen Pass is situated at a gap in the middle section of the hundreds-of-kilometers-long Greater Jian Mountain range. Seventy-two peaks shaped like sharp swords form a natural barrier. It has the strategic advantage of being a place where “one man could hold the pass against ten thousand,” holding extremely significant military importance. More than a hundred battles have taken place here, over ten emperors have visited, and countless literati have left nearly four thousand works. In the past, the Shu general Jiang Wei relied on this natural stronghold to repel a 100,000-strong Wei army outside the pass. Existing remnants include the site where Zhuge Liang built the pass, ancient temples, precious stone inscriptions, and the famed Four Scenic Spots of Jianmen (fine rain at Jianmen, pine waves on Mount Liang, sunset over the cliffs, and snow on emerald clouds), as well as the Four Wonders of Jianmen (the statue of Jiang Wei, thousand-year-old purple Chinese redbud, evergreen pines and cypresses, and stone bamboo shoots of Jian Mountain).
