Huangmaoya — Huangmaoya Battle Site. The ashes of Comrade Li Xiannian were scattered here. Huangmaoya is located on the Panlong Mountain Ridge, 102 kilometers northeast of Cangxi County. Between the Panlong Fort and Shizi Fort on the mountain, there is a pair of yellow boulders shaped like cats, hence the name Huangmaoya. In September 1934, during the Red Fourth Army’s pursuit in the counteroffensive against the six-route siege, Commander-in-Chief Xu Xiangqian personally led the 30th Army and the 93rd Division of the 31st Army from Bā, while Li Xiannian and Cheng Shicai commanded the 30th Army as the vanguard to swiftly penetrate the enemy’s rear and rapidly seize Huangmaoya, cutting off the retreat route of Sun Zhen’s forces to Cangxi. Under the command of Political Commissar Li Xiannian and Deputy Army Commander Cheng Shicai, the 30th Army marched through the night and seized the hilltops on both sides of the Huangmaoya canyon area. At dawn on the 15th, the main fleeing enemy forces retreated to Huangmaoya, and our army launched a full-scale offensive. After a day and night of hand-to-hand combat, the enemy was completely annihilated, with over 4,000 officers and soldiers including brigade commanders killed, more than 10,000 captured, and over 7,000 rifles seized, along with more than 40 mortars — marking the greatest victory since the beginning. The great triumph at the Battle of Huangmaoya signified the complete victory of the Red Fourth Army in the counteroffensive against the six-route siege. To commemorate this great victory, the Cangxi County People’s Government erected the “Huangmaoya Battle Victory Monument” in 1967 at the pass of Huangmaoya. After the passing of Chairman Li Xiannian, he specifically requested that his ashes be scattered on this red land. To honor the Red Army officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the battle, the government and local schools’ Young Pioneers have successively built monuments here, and every year during Tomb-Sweeping Day and other memorial occasions, people come to pay their respects.
