Former Site of the Soviet Government of Cangxi County
The Former Site of the Soviet Government of Cangxi County is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province and a classic red tourism destination.
Wenchang Palace — Former Site of the Soviet Government of Cangxi County, Sichuan-Shaanxi Base Area. This was also the site of the CPC Cangxi County Committee under the Sichuan-Shaanxi Provincial Committee. Located in Wenchang Palace at Wenchangchang, approximately 90 kilometers northeast of Cangxi County’s county seat, it is a traditional wooden-structured, single-story courtyard complex. The front and rear halls each have five rooms, and there are five parallel wing rooms on the left and right sides. In June 1933, the Fourth Front Red Army liberated the Wenchang area, and the CPC Sichuan-Shaanxi Provincial Committee officially approved the establishment of the CPC Cangxi County Committee. In July, the Soviet Government of Cangxi County, Sichuan-Shaanxi Base Area, relocated here from Yunshanba. The county committee had jurisdiction over twelve district party committees (Wenchang, Shimǎ, Yuédōng, Xinguān, Sānchuān, Báimiào, Lǎoguān, Lóngshān, Dōngxī, Yǒngníng, Yuánbà, and Yùliù), ninety-five branches, and more than a thousand party members. The CPC Cangxi County Committee carried out frequent combat missions while also organizing the people across the county to advance various initiatives centered around land revolution. On September 8, the First Workers’, Peasants’ and Soldiers’ Congress of Cangxi County was held in Wenchangchang, leading to the establishment of the Soviet Government, where Commander-in-Chief Xu Xiangqian had his office. That autumn, after arriving in Wenchangchang, Red Fourth Front Army Commander-in-Chief Xu Xiangqian took up residence here. The main gate of the front hall bears an engraved couplet that reads: “With axes we split open a new world; with sickles we sever the old order.” Steps outside the gate lead directly into the town. Carved into the stone walls of the front hall are revolutionary slogans such as “Down with imperialism, establish the Soviet regime,” “Expand the Red Army, distribute land equally,” “Arm the workers and peasants,” and “Annihilate Liu Xiang, communize all of Sichuan.” For eighty years, these slogans have inspired the people of the old revolutionary base areas to strive with determination, enthusiastically join the army, and actively build a new socialist countryside. On April 8, 1983, the county government designated it as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. The compound remains largely unchanged to this day and is well preserved.
