Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Yonghe Township
Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Yonghe Township From the spring of 1929 onwards, progressive young students such as Zhang—(Zongyou) and He Xiang, who were studying in other places, would return to their hometown during winter and summer vacations to promote new culture and new ideas, spread Marxism-Leninism, inspire the masses to join the Peasants’ Association, and under the direction of the higher-level Party organization, secretly establish underground Party cells, recruit guerrilla members, build up peasant armed forces, and engage actively in revolutionary activities. In January 1930, two branches—the Chenjiagou Branch and the Tulunping Branch—were successively established under the leadership of the Southern Special Committee. This marked the beginning of guided revolutionary efforts, as documented in “Chronicles of Red Crag in Cangxi.” These branches were the earliest Communist Party branches in Cangxi County. The Chenjiagou Branch of the CPC was chaired by Zhang Zonghua, with members including Zhang Zongshi, Zhang Yide, and others; its second branch secretary was Chen Ziqian. The Tulunping Branch of the CPC was led by Yang Liangzhi, with members such as Yang Liangcheng and He Zhichun. After 1930, Peasants’ Associations were successively formed in Chenjiagou, Tulunping, and Tanjiaba. In September of the same year, the First Township Soviet Government of the Seventh District of Cangxi County was established at Baiyun’an, which continued to operate until 1933. Over 500 guerrilla fighters were recruited. They carried out struggles against local tyrants and corrupt officials, resisted rents and taxes, promoted land revolution, and fought against warlords and the reactionary Kuomintang forces—writing countless moving, stirring, and heroic stories.
To commemorate the martyrs and inspire future generations, the township Party committee and government have built a Red Army Memorial Park at Baiyun’an and Penglingguan, and are applying for the establishment of a Red Army Cultural Education Base. Every year on Tomb-Sweeping Day, teachers, students, and members of the public visit to pay respects and sweep the tombs. More than seven thousand people have been received so far.
