Hechuan Shuanglong Lake is a National Water Conservancy Scenic Area.

The Shuanglong Lake Tourist Scenic Area is located in Laifan Town, Hechuan, about 26 kilometers from downtown Hechuan. It is an important part of the Dragon-shaped Tourist Route—Diaoyu City – Shuanglong Lake – Laifan Ancient Town—that Hechuan is focusing on developing, and it is also recognized as Chongqing’s Dragon Boat Base by the Chongqing Municipal Sports Bureau. The entire scenic area covers 23.4 square kilometers, with the lake surface spanning 6,879 mu (approximately 4,586 acres), and the shoreline stretching 81.123 kilometers. The shoreline is winding with numerous branches, and the lake features several isolated islands and peninsulas, creating a broad yet deep, tree-like water formation. It includes 4 full islands, 67 peninsulas, and over 100 lake bays and inlets.

The lake’s surface is winding and ever-changing. In wider sections, the mountains and water blend into one, dotted with flocks of wild ducks; in narrower stretches, the deep, crystal-clear waters host small boats here and there, adding dynamism to the otherwise serene, virgin-like lake. Countless inlets surrounded by low rolling hills form a massive natural maze. Due to cliff formations in certain areas, many natural attractions have emerged: Lazy Dragon Rock, Tiger Stone Cave, Eagle Beak Rock, etc., making visitors feel as if they’ve entered a fantastical fairy-tale world. The Xiangshuiyan Waterfall and Three Rocks Waterfall echo for miles, brimming with charm. Here, you can watch the sunrise at dawn, admire the sunset glow in the evening, cruise the lake, and break the silver-like ripples with your oar. With the boat gliding on the water and people seemingly wandering in a painting, it is an ideal destination for sightseeing, travel, leisure, summer retreats, conferences, and recreation.

Shuanglong Lake is one of Chongqing’s “Top Ten Lesser Scenic Spots.” The reservoir was completed in 1983, with the Shuanglong Lake Dam built to contain it. The lake surface consists of two water bodies—one flowing from west to east and the other from north to south—that converge at the dam. The lake has many twists and turns, with over 100 inlets. Inlets longer than 100 meters make the water surface long, winding, and ever-varying, forming the unique natural scenery of Shuanglong Lake. The difference in elevation between the lake surface and the surrounding low hills is within 40 meters, creating a layered, richly-viewed landscape where lake and mountain complement each other. The Shuanglong Lake Dam is situated at the confluence of two streams, naturally forming a round, independent small island, resembling “two dragons cradling a treasure,” hence the name “Shuanglong Lake” (Double Dragons Lake). In wider sections, the lake presents a harmonious blend of mountain and water, with flocks of wild ducks, white cranes spreading their wings, and birds soaring freely; in narrower parts, the deep, clear waters are captivating. The area’s cultural attractions, such as ancient fortress ruins from the Ming Dynasty and cliff tombs from the Han Dynasty, complement the beautiful natural scenery, together forming numerous scenic views including Twin Dragons Waterfall, Deep Bay Exploration, Moon over Shuanglong Lake, Misty Isles, and Sunset Glow over the Solitary Fortress. The scenic area boasts picturesque natural landscapes, undulating low hills and mountains, tranquil and elegant pastoral scenes, and an integration of mountains, water, forests, caves, and karst formations, resulting in a wealth of natural and cultural attractions.
