Qizi Bay (Romantic Cape) is situated on the western coast of Hainan Island, in the western part of Changjiang County, 3 kilometers north of Changhua Town and 55 kilometers from Shilu Town, the county seat of Changjiang. This bay lies east of the Changhua Ridge and west to the sea, stretching about 20 kilometers in an S-shape, featuring numerous rocks, white sand, and calm waves. The bay has crystal-clear water revealing the seabed, soft and fine silver-white sand. The coastline is lined with dramatic peaks, uniquely-shaped strange rocks, lush forests, blooming wildflowers, bubbling springs, and bright sunshine. With its spring-like climate all year round, it is a rare natural bathing spot and an ideal place for sunbathing and sand bathing. The rugged rocks come in various colors, dense woods, green grass, singing springs, and a seamless blend of silver sands with the deep blue sea, offering a truly uplifting experience.

Qizi Bay features an S-shaped coastline extending over 20 kilometers. The waters are calm and crystal clear, with soft, snow-white sand. The shoreline is dotted with dramatic peaks and uniquely-shaped rocks. There are more than twenty natural attractions, including the captivating Junbi Corner, Ximei Corner, Jianzhen Meditating, Yellow Emperor Worshiping the Sea, Divine Turtle Exploring the Sea, Big Corner Stone Forest, Small Corner Stone Forest, Immortal’s Footprints, Zhu Bajie Carrying His Wife, Sea Worshiping Stone, Fish Viewing Stone, Flame Stone, Lovers’ Stone, Sailboat Stone, Guanyin Stone, Guanyin Pool, Qizi Basket, Wanglang Beach, Baisha Ridge, Zhi Xuan Gully, Natural Bonsai Garden, and Wild Pineapple Holiday Village.

Qizi Bay is the only tourist resort in Hainan that retains its pristine, natural landscape. Not only is it known for its spectacular scenery, but it is also steeped in beautiful legends. Throughout history, notable figures such as Su Dongpo, Zhao Ding, and Guo Moruo were drawn to its enchanting beauty and left behind widely cherished poems.

Qizi Bay is a 5-kilometer-long bay nestled beneath the Changhua Ridge. The seabed has a gentle slope, the water is clear, and the sand is fine and snow-white. Even 200 meters from the shore, the water remains shallow enough not to go over your chest. Among the coastal reefs lies a pebble beach of several hundred square meters scattered with colorful “chess pieces”—stones in white, jewel green, earth red, and egg yellow. They resemble jade and agate, creating a truly magnificent sight.

The most captivating aspect of Qizi Bay’s stunning scenery is its natural formations. One standout is the “Sailboat Stone,” a massive rock resembling a sailboat that forms a natural barrier separating the inner and outer bay. While the outer bay faces rough waves, the inner area remains calm. Visitors who climb onto the rock to gaze at the sea are always amazed by the view.

Qizi Bay is quiet and less crowded, with crystal-clear waters and soft, fine sand that connects to the rocky beach. Strolling along the coastline offers ever-changing views, making it a highly enjoyable experience. The rocky beach features rugged stones that resemble a “seaside stone forest.” Among them, Qizi Basket is the spot with the highest concentration of these unique stone pieces, displaying a variety of colorful pebbles—white, earth red, light yellow—that glisten under the sea’s washing, presenting an extraordinary sight.

Driving directions: Starting from Haikou, take the western section of Hainan’s G98 Ring Expressway to the Changjiang exit. The journey covers 198 kilometers and takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Backpacker guide: Take a direct ordinary bus from Haikou’s West Long-Distance Bus Station to Changhua Town in Changjiang County. There is one bus per day, departing at 12:20 and arriving at 16:00. The fare is 34 RMB per person. In Changhua Town, rent a “Fengcai” vehicle to Qizi Bay. The distance on asphalt road is 8.5 km, with a fare of 5 RMB. Returning from Changhua Town to Haikou, buses depart at 05:10 and arrive at 09:00.

Self-help tip: Bringing your own tent is the best accommodation option at Qizi Bay. Besides staying within the scenic area, you can also stay at private guesthouses in Changhua Town. Air-conditioned rooms: 80 RMB per room; non-air-conditioned rooms: 15 RMB per room.

The western coastal area of Hainan Island, where Qizi Bay is located, spans both Dongfang City and Changjiang County. It is the driest region of the island, receiving only 700–900 mm of rainfall annually, while evaporation reaches up to 2500 mm. The temperatures here also hold some of Hainan’s highest records, with ground surface temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius at noon in summer. The harsh climate has led to severe soil desertification. Across the vast tropical coastal desert, only drought- and heat-resistant plants such as cacti, Scaevola taccada, and Pandanus continue to signify the persistence of life.

Qizi Bay has a Zhi Xuan Gully where the river water can be used for fresh-water bathing. It is said that the minerals in the water can treat skin diseases.

Qizi Bay Tourist Resort is a tourism planning project by Peak International Planning & Design Company in 2010.

On August 25, 2016, Qizi Bay was included in the fifth batch of National Marine Parks by the State Oceanic Administration.
