Fern Shadows in the Green

The cycad fern is a large, ancient tree fern species whose population thrived alongside dinosaurs 180 million years ago, earning it the reputation of a "living fossil." The suitable habitat for cycad ferns is a "refuge" from the Mesozoic Jurassic period, where the natural ecology has remained in an ancient, pristine "baseline" state. In the park’s Yajia Ridge, below an altitude of 1,000 meters in the shady and humid areas, they are distributed in patches, covering a total area of approximately 0.5 hectares. They grow to an average height of 3–8 meters, are over 200 years old, have column-like straight trunks, and an average diameter at breast height of around 20 centimeters.
