The Majestic Torreya grandis

Torreya grandis, also known as red-bark pine, is a unique tree species native to Hainan. Its entire body contains anti-cancer alkaloids. A total of nine alkaloids can be isolated from the crude alkaloids extracted from its bark and roots, four of which are ester alkaloids with anti-cancer activity. Currently, three exceptionally large mother trees of Torreya grandis, over 20 meters tall and with diameters of 45 centimeters, have been discovered in the tropical rainforest of Bawangling Forest Park. These three mother trees are over 500 years old and are among the rarest Torreya grandis mother trees in China. According to preliminary surveys, there are more than 100 Torreya grandis trees growing in the Bawangling area.
