Hopea hainanensis

Hopea hainanensis is an evergreen tree and a Class I nationally protected plant. Its trunk is straight and generally grows to over 30 meters tall, resembling a towering pillar. It has several notable characteristics: first, its wood is as hard as iron and is hailed as the “steel of timber.” Second, it has a specific gravity greater than water, enabling it to sink; third, it has a dense structure with clear grain patterns, is resistant to rot, water immersion, and sunlight. This naturally grown Hopea hainanensis is on the verge of extinction. In Bawangling, it can only be found sparsely scattered across the Yajia Mountain Range, with over 100 trees discovered so far, averaging 120 years in age, 22 meters in height, and 28 meters in average crown diameter.
