History

The Lingao Confucius Temple was originally called the Confucian School. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it merged with the Temple of Confucius and was commonly referred to as the Educational Palace, also known as the Confucius Temple or the Holy Hall.

The Lingao Confucius Temple was first built during the Qingli era of the Northern Song Dynasty under imperial decree, boasting a history of over 900 years. It was relocated to its current site during the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty, but was later destroyed during the Yuan Dynasty. It was rebuilt on the original site in the third year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, making it more than 700 years old. Over the dynasties, local magistrates from both the Ming and Qing periods contributed funds for renovations. In the early years of the Republic of China, gentry such as Tan Mingluan organized dozens of people who traveled light into villages and market towns to raise funds for a major restoration. According to stone inscriptions, the donation drive involved 1,468 contributors who donated a total of 8,768 silver dollars, with the largest single donation being 80 dollars. The renovation preserved the Ming Dynasty layout and structure. The rebuilt Confucius Temple featured wooden and stone construction, including vermilion walls, the Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Shrine, Minglun Hall, East Study, West Study, East Wing Rooms, West Wing Rooms, Memorial Hall of Meritorious Officials, Memorial Hall of Local Sages, Filial Piety Shrine, Loyalty and Righteousness Shrine, Ritual Utensil Room, Musical Instrument Room, Pan Pond, Pan Pond Bridge, Lingxing Gate, Ritual Gate, Righteous Path, covering an area of 3,188 square meters.

The Lingao Confucius Temple is a public shrine where the people of Lingao worship Confucius and Confucian sages. On Confucius worship days, the town empties out as people flock to pay their respects, reflecting the Lingao people's reverence for Confucian teachings and esteem for ancient sages.

From its establishment until the Republican period, the Lingao Confucius Temple served as the highest institution for education, talent cultivation, and the revitalization of Lingao culture, nurturing many talented individuals. By the mid-Republican period, with the rise of modern education, the temple was converted into the Lingao Rural Normal School, which preceded today’s Lingao Middle School and Lingao Normal School.
