Monument to Martyrs Feng Ping and Fu Jie

The Monument to Martyrs Feng Ping and Fu Jie is a classic site on China’s red tourism trail.

The Monument to Martyrs Feng Ping and Fu Jie is located on the northern section of Wenming Road, Jinjiang Town, Chengmai County (opposite the county bus station). It was initially built in 1957 and renovated and expanded in November 2001. The monument park covers an area of 1,400 square meters. The memorial monument faces southeast and is situated northwest; it stands 5.2 meters tall, with a base that is 1.5 meters wide and a pedestal 1 meter high, in a square shape and made of cement concrete. The front of the pedestal is engraved with biographies of the two martyrs.

The monument was built by the People’s Government of Chengmai County in memory of Martyrs Feng Ping and Fu Jie. It is a patriotic education base in Hainan Province.

Feng Ping (1899–1928), originally named Feng Sufan and styled Maonan, later adopted the name Feng Ping after joining the revolutionary movement. He was from Meide Village, Dachang Township (now Donglu Town), Wenchang County, Hainan. He was one of the founders of the Qiongya Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. Born on March 11, 1899, into a poor farming family, he attended the “Yumin School” in his village at the age of 8. After graduating from elementary school, he was admitted to Qiongya Middle School (now Qiongtai Normal School), and later went on to study at Shanghai Culture University. A year later, he returned to Guangzhou to attend university. Fu Jie (1899–1928), originally named Fu Daixu and styled Baochu, was from Xiadian Village, Dongjiao Township, Wenchang County, Hainan. As a child, he studied at a local private school. In 1914, he was admitted to Hongwen Higher Elementary School in Dongjiao, where he was diligent and excelled academically. After graduating from elementary school, he worked as a teacher at a local primary school. During his teaching years, he read various progressive publications in his spare time and was influenced by revolutionary ideas.
