Monument to Martyr Wu Yuanlong

The Monument to Martyr Wu Yuanlong is a classic site on China’s Red Tourism route.

The Monument to Martyr Wu Yuanlong is located south of Yuanlong Primary School in Qiaotou Town, Chengmai County. It was built in December 1974. Covering an area of 21 square meters, the monument faces south and stands 5.4 meters tall. Its front side is inscribed with “Monument to Martyr Wu Yuanlong” and details about the martyr’s life.

It was built by the People’s Government of Chengmai County to commemorate Martyr Wu Yuanlong. The site also serves as a patriotic education base for Chengmai County.

Wu Yuanlong (1903–1941), originally named Wu Yuanzhang, was from Wenbing Village, Qiaotou Town, Chengmai County, Hainan. He came from a poor farming family. In 1926, he joined the revolutionary movement and became a member of the Communist Party of China in 1927. He once served as Secretary of the Guidan Branch of the CPC, Secretary of the Chengbei District Committee, and Captain of the 5th Company of the 5th Red Workers' and Peasants' Army of Qiongya. In 1932, following the failure of the Red Army’s second counter-encirclement campaign in Qiongya, the revolution entered a downturn. He led the CPC members of the Guidan Branch in continuing the revolutionary struggle, keeping the revolutionary spirit alive and the red flag flying in the Guidan region (today’s Fushan and Qiaotou areas).
