General Ma Baishan Memorial Park

General Ma Baishan Memorial Park is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

General Ma Baishan Memorial Park is situated on the seashore west of Macheng Town, Chengmai County. It was completed on September 26, 1997, and covers an area of 9,999 square meters. The park faces east toward the sea. In the center stands a bronze statue of General Ma Baishan. The front of the statue’s base is engraved with calligraphy by Yang Chengwu reading “General Ma Baishan,” while the back details his life and achievements. To the right is an exhibition hall, to the left a memorial pavilion, and in the middle a wall corridor. The main entrance lies in front of the statue, featuring 33 steps leading up to it. The entire complex is majestic and imposing.

Constructed by the People's Government of Chengmai County in honor of General Ma Baishan, it serves as a patriotic education base for the county.

The park faces east and spans approximately 12 mu (about 0.8 hectares). Its foundation stone was laid on August 1, 1993, and it took four years to complete. The memorial park consists of a gate pavilion, statue platform, exhibition hall (main hall), side rooms, connecting corridors, pavilions, and enclosing walls. In front of the gate pavilion stand four cement pillars tiled with brown ceramic, topped with glazed tiles. Its steps are divided into four levels, totaling 33 steps — the first to third levels have 23 steps in total, symbolizing General Ma Baishan’s 23 years of unwavering revolutionary struggle on the isolated island where the red flag never fell.

Ma Baishan (1907–1992), originally named Ma Jiaxing, was from Yinti Village, Fengping District, Gonggui Township, Chengmai County, Hainan (now Ma Village, Macheng Town). He was one of the outstanding leaders of the Qiongya Column, Deputy Commander of the Hainan Military Region, and held the rank of Major General. Born on March 1, 1907, he entered Qionghai Middle School (now Hainan Middle School) in the spring of 1925 and joined the Chinese Kuomintang that winter. He became a member of the Communist Party of China in September 1927. In the summer of 1928, he served as Secretary of the CPC Cheng No. 4 District Committee and leader of the district Red Army squad.
