The Nankun Ethnic Culture Tourism Area is located at the foot of the northern side of Jizui Ridge, the highest peak in Tuncheng County, nestled beside the Nanrong Highway that connects Yangpu to Tuncheng, about 30 kilometers from Tuncheng Town. This area is home to many ethnic Li and Miao people, known for their simple folkways, sincere customs, and unique traditions.

The Nankun Miao Village scenic area boasts beautiful surroundings and extremely convenient transportation. The Miao people have distinctive customs and traditions. Activities such as bullfighting, lusheng dancing, and courtship walks are among the main celebratory events during the Miao New Year. Bullfighting draws crowds who cheer passionately, creating an intense and lively atmosphere. Lusheng dancing is a beloved dance form among the Miao, often themed around love songs, harvest celebrations, and expressions of hope for a bright future, all delivered in lively and cheerful rhythms. Courtship walks are a key social activity for young Miao men and women, where they express affection and seek partners through singing competitions and antiphonal singing.

The Miao people are one of the ethnic groups native to Hainan Province, with a current population of around 60,000, primarily scattered across the central and southern regions of Hainan Island. From their migration to Hainan to eventual settlement and agricultural establishment, the Miao people have traversed a long and arduous journey.

Among the special foods of the Miao people are five-color rice and bamboo tube rice. Five-color rice is a highly distinctive traditional dish made by the Miao people in Hainan. During the traditional “March 3rd” festival, nearly every Miao household prepares it. The rice comes in five colors—red, yellow, blue, white, and black—each achieved by mixing rice with natural plant juices used as dyes, then steaming it in specially crafted wooden steamers. The vibrant hues, fragrant aroma, and refreshing taste make it a delicious appetite-whetting and cooling dish. Today, the traditional five-color rice has been adapted into three-color rice, featuring red, yellow, and black, derived from fresh plants such as red amaranth, turmeric, and maple leaves. The fragrance of three-color rice brings joy to the Miao people and offers a unique culinary experience to visitors. The clothing of Miao men and women is renowned for its exquisite beauty. Among them, the embroidered dresses, headbands, and hairpins worn by Miao girls are especially rich in variety and stunning in design. Miao women in Hainan often embroider garments and accessories such as dresses, headscarves, and waistbands made from batik fabric or batik-patterned materials using bold, exaggerated patterns and vivid colored threads. Their embroidery is delicate and intricate, with tasteful designs inspired by the local natural scenery, birds, animals, and rare plants.
