Bai Mian Yao Village in Zhoushi Village, Sishui Township, Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County is a typical representation of the Hong Yao, a branch of the Yao ethnic group. Situated along the tourist route from Longsheng County to the hot springs, it lies 26 km from the county seat and 3 km from the hot springs. This ancient Yao village is home to 52 households and over 206 people, with 187 ethnic minority residents accounting for 90% of the total population. It is a naturally formed village inhabited solely by the Hong Yao. The site was developed as a folk culture village in 1993. Bai Mian Yao Village enjoys a monsoon climate with abundant rainfall and a pleasant climate. The annual average temperature is 18.0°C, the frost-free period averages 315 days, and annual precipitation ranges between 1400–2300 mm. The area is covered with dense forests. The village is shaded by tall maple trees, with serene woods behind the houses. At the entrance stands a Qing Dynasty stone stele inscribed with village rules, and in front of the village rises the “Red Yao Pillar.” The villagers are all skilled in singing mountain songs and are known for their hospitality. When you visit the Red Yao Village, young Yao women dressed in vibrant costumes will greet you with sweet mountain songs, perform their unique ethnic dances, and demonstrate traditional sports. You can also enjoy the delicious Yao oil tea, leaving you with unforgettable memories.

Bai Mian Strange Rock

In the Longsheng Hot Springs National Forest Park, located 4 km from the core hot springs area beneath Bai Mian Yao Village, there is a peculiar rock that juts out horizontally from the mountainside for several meters. Shaped like the tongue of a giant dragon, it is also known as the “Red Army Rock” and the “Light Rock.” The “Red Army Rock” of Bai Mian Yao Village is the first scenic highlight upon entering the Longsheng Hot Springs area. This extraordinary rock seems to rise abruptly from the mountain, resembling a giant’s arm extending several meters out. It has been likened to a “swimming shark,” “flying wing,” or “thrusting sword.” Beneath the rock is a small flat area that can accommodate 10–20 people for gatherings. On December 6, 1934, a unit of the Red Third Army Corps once met with local Yao elders who had participated in the Guangxi Yao uprising at the foot of this rock. They pointed out the path of revolution and encouraged them to persevere in the struggle. They also inscribed on the rock face: “Continue the struggle, seek light again” and “The Red Army will absolutely protect the Yao people.” Later, the Yao people carved these words as they were written, and they remain clearly visible to this day. To commemorate this meeting, the Yao people renamed the Dragon Tongue Rock as the “Light Rock.” In 1987, the county government built a pavilion here and designated it as a key cultural relic protection unit. Today, Bai Mian Yao Village has become a folk tourism village showcasing Yao culture, and the “Light Rock,” standing beside the Red Army Memorial Pavilion on its side, serves as the village’s iconic gateway.

Historical Legends

This is a very ancient Yao village. Moss-covered ancient trees, steles, wells, and stone pillars (also called Vow Stones) silently tell its long history. The “village beauties” of Bai Mian Yao Village are skilled singers and dancers, often regarded as the Yao people’s Liu Sanjie (a famous folk singer). Their series of joyful songs and dances reflecting celebrations, courtship, and social activities are full of charm, while traditional ethnic sports such as “Bamboo Pole Pushing” and “Elephant Wrestling” are lively and fun, encouraging active participation from visitors. Bai Mian Village is also known as the “Son-in-Law Village,” where generations of men have married into other families as in-laws, while women stay to welcome “son-in-laws.” Their stories of using mountain songs to attract spouses, along with local legends, form an integral part of the unique cultural atmosphere of Bai Mian Yao Village.
