The Red Army Bridge, originally named Shunfeng Bridge, is located on the Weijiang River in Pannai Village, Weijiang Township, Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County, Guangxi. Originally built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, it was rebuilt in the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947). The entire bridge features a single 30-meter-span arch, constructed using thick round fir logs stacked according to mechanical principles. Wooden planks are laid horizontally across the arch beams, and a tiled corridor connects both riverbanks. The corridor is lined with benches along the walkways for travelers to rest. On one side of the bridge’s center, two hanging pillars were added and used as an altar to enshrine deities and ritual objects. The bridge covers a total area of 118.4 square meters, with a length of 37 meters, a width of 3.2 meters, and a height of 8 meters. Its unique architectural style embodies the exquisite construction techniques of the Miao people. It is the only single-arch, covered corridor-style tile bridge built by the Miao ethnic group in Longsheng County. In the winter of 1934, the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army broke through the Xiang River, crossed the Laoshanjie Mountain, and entered Longsheng. The rear guard unit of the Red Ninth Army used this bridge (the original old bridge) to block pursuing enemy forces. Although the Red Army could have destroyed the bridge to stop the enemy, they chose not to do so out of consideration for the Party’s ethnic policies. During the blocking battle, more than ten Red Army soldiers were killed or wounded. After the liberation, the bridge came to be known as the “Red Army Bridge.” On July 8, 1994, the People’s Government of the Autonomous Region designated it as a key municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.
