Lingyun Ancient City

Lingyun County is located in the northwest of Guangxi, on the southeastern edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. In the fifth year of the Huangyou era of the Song Dynasty (1053 AD), Sicheng Prefecture was established, and in the fifteenth year of the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1658 AD), Sicheng Prefecture was elevated to a fu. In the fifth year of the Yongzheng era (1727 AD), the system of appointed officials was introduced, and in the fifth year of the Qianlong era (1740 AD), Lingyun County was established under Sicheng Fu. Both Sicheng Fu and Lingyun County were governed from the same location in Sicheng, historically referred to as "fu and county sharing the same city."

Ancient Lingyun boasted 28 scenic spots, each captivating in its own way. Scenes such as the Morning Bell of Ancient Temples, Welcoming the Dawn’s Glow, Fishing Fires of Fen Zhou, Spring Outings in East Suburb, Woodcutters Returning in North Suburb, Cloud Terrace Overlook, Five Finger Peaks Holding the Moon, and Ancient Village with Gushing Springs remain well-preserved to this day. China’s earliest cave temple, Shuiyuan Cave, is still bustling with incense and worshippers; Naling Cave, where one can seemingly touch the pulse of the Earth’s heart and be imbued with the spiritual essence of nature, remains shrouded in mystery; and the hanging coffins in Xiaotianlong Cave inspire awe. Historical relics are found everywhere, including the ruins of Manwang City, Shuiyuan Temple at Shuiyuan Cave, Sicheng Confucian Temple, Chunxi Gate and Yicui Gate, Sanxing Pagoda, and Tianshun Bell—sites with long histories that have been preserved relatively intact. Built in 1457 during the Ming Dynasty, YunTai Temple features the “Seven-Temple Pagoda” just outside its grounds. The Zhongshan Memorial Hall, constructed in 1938, is one of only two such memorials in Guangxi. The city also hosts eight ancient bridges, among them: the Jingcheng Bridge, built in 1682 by Tu Zhifu Cen Jilu; the Jielong Bridge, built in 1671; the Qingping Bridge, built in 1686 during the 25th year of the Kangxi era, later renamed Taiping Bridge. As the ancients said: “The wise delight in water, the benevolent delight in earth, and those who embody both delight in stone.” Today we say: “Those of wisdom and virtue delight in Lingyun!”
