Dalongtan Scenic Area

Dalongtan is located at the source of the Longtan River, about 1 kilometer north of Jingxi City. The water in the pool is crystal clear, gushing up from the bottom as if boiling, covering an area of over 20 acres. Legend has it that the deep waters once housed a dragon, hence the name. In the 11th year of the Yongzheng reign, local official Luo Weixiang built a Dragon God Temple at the foot of the hill by the pool. The surroundings are lush with trees and ancient banyans reaching the sky. In front of the temple stands Huanghua Pavilion. Officials Wang Fangtian and Yan Sihui both composed couplets, such as: “It is both a lively and serene scene, featuring mountain cliffs and waterfalls.” and “Raising my hand, I wish to beckon the crane in the clouds; chanting boldly, I fear startling the dragon beneath the water.” To the right of the temple is the Qianlai Pavilion, which houses a stone tablet engraved with a cursive script character “Goose,” imitating the style of Wang Xizhi from the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The character is 2 meters tall and 1 meter wide. Beside the tablet is inscribed a couplet written by Wang Yangming of the Ming Dynasty: “Lofty thoughts soar with the wind above the clouds; harmonious light and spring mist bring refreshing autumn air.” Both inscriptions feature vigorous brushwork. To the left of the temple stands a three-tiered pagoda, simple yet exquisite. In the pool is the Anhu Pavilion, where Prefect Tang Fan wrote: “This water naturally encircles the land of Guihai; knowing you, you can’t help but miss Ming Lake.” Surrounded by water on all sides, it appears from afar like pavilions floating on the water. To the north of the pool is the Fisherman Casting His Net Mountain, to the east is Five Horses Returning to the Stable, to the southeast is Binh Mountain, and to the west are Golden Mountain, Silver Mountain, all set against the backdrop of clear and serene mountain and water scenery.

It is said that in ancient times, a scholar riding a horse passed by, but the horse, reluctant to leave, drank from the pool. The scholar threw money into the pool as thanks before the horse would continue on its way, hence the tale of “the dragon pool where the horse drinks and coins are tossed,” one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Jingxi. In 1960, a masonry spillway dam was built 500 meters downstream from the pool. The reservoir created behind the dam became an artificial lake named “Dalongtan Reservoir.” With a water surface covering 250 acres, the lake reflects the shadows of pine trees and bamboo, with rippling blue waves. The original temple, pavilions, pagodas, and ancient banyans by the pool have all been destroyed. The “Goose” character stele was relocated to the Wangjiang Pavilion downstream of the dam. The slopes at the foot of the mountain near the reservoir have been newly planted with dense forests, now lush and green. During the rainy season, water overflows from the top of the dam, cascading like a Milky Way, presenting a spectacular sight.
