Yan Jici Memorial Hall is a patriotic education base.

I. Overview of the Hall:

Address: Located at Jiaojianshan at the northern end of Wansheng Street in Hengdian Town, covering an area of 150 mu. Construction began in late 1996, commenced in March 1997, and the hall was grandly opened in January 1998. It is now a patriotic education base for both Jinhua City and Dongyang City.

II. Introduction to Yan Jici:

Yan Jici was born on January 23, 1901, in Xiawu Yan Village, Dongyang County, Zhejiang Province. He obtained a master’s degree in mathematics, physics, and chemistry from the University of Paris in 1925 and a Doctor of Science degree from the French National Centre for Scientific Research in 1927. He successively served as a professor at Datong University and China Public School in Shanghai, Jinan University, and the Fourth Sun Yat-sen University in Nanjing. He also conducted scientific research in Paris, France, and served as the director of the Institute of Physics at the Academia Sinica, among other positions. After 1949, he held various roles including Director of the General Office of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Institute of Applied Physics, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Secretary and Honorary Chairman of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology, President of the University of Science and Technology of China, and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Sixth and Seventh National People’s Congresses. Mr. Yan dedicated his life to the establishment and development of China’s science and technology industry. He was one of the pioneers of modern physics research in China and made significant achievements in fields such as piezoelectric crystallography, spectroscopy, atmospheric physics, and applied optics. He is revered as the “Sage of Science and Master of Education.” He passed away in Beijing on November 2, 1996, at the age of 96.

III. Brief Introduction to the Hall Building:

The total construction area of the memorial hall is 3,000 square meters, consisting of seven parts in sequence: the Segrang Archway, Muguang Bridge, Lotus Pond, Exhibition Rooms, Monument, Clothes and Hat Tomb, and Jici Pavilion. The main building, the Yan Jici Exhibition Room, is entirely modeled after the layout of the prince’s courtyard residence where Mr. Yan lived in Beijing—solemn and elegant. In the center is the Hall of Homage, with four major exhibition rooms on both sides. The backyard of the memorial hall serves as a restoration room, with a reception hall in the center and the bedrooms and offices of Mr. Yan and his wife Zhang Zongying on either side. Behind the hall is a majestic Yan Jici Monument and Memorial Pavilion situated on the hill.

IV. Exhibition Items:

In the Hall of Homage, a lifelike bronze statue of Mr. Yan stands, flanked by plaques inscribed with the words “Sage of Science” and “Master of Education,” penned by Wu Jieping and Lu Jiaxi. The Restoration Room contains all original furniture and items used by Mr. and Mrs. Yan during their lifetime, arranged in their original positions, recreating the living scene of the time. Among them are treasures such as the original letter from Jiang Zemin to Mr. Yan. The four major exhibition rooms display over 1,000 precious historical photos, images, documents, publications, and objects, offering extremely rich and detailed insights into Mr. Yan’s illustrious life. Noteworthy exhibits include: the Yan Family Genealogy, a letter from Madame Curie to Yan Jici, Xu Beihong’s gifted painting “Magpie on the Branch,” Mao Zedong’s signed appointment letter, photos of central leaders such as Deng Xiaoping, - , and Jiang Zemin meeting with Mr. Yan, as well as numerous manuscripts, certificates, and personal documents of Mr. Yan.

V. Reception Information:

Yan Jici Memorial Hall is open to the public free of charge year-round, receiving visiting groups such as local primary and secondary school students, party member activity groups, village and neighborhood committee teams, as well as youth league activity groups from nearby counties and cities.
