The Guangzhou Street · Hong Kong Street scenic area in Hengdian is a nationally renowned filming location for the Opium War and has been designated as the National Anti-Drug Education (Zhejiang) Base. It promotes the theme of "Cherish Life, Say No to Drugs" and primarily delivers anti-drug education through its exhibition halls. Built against the backdrop of the Opium War—the beginning of China’s modern history and a critical turning point—“19th-century South Canton Guangzhou Street” represents the typical social setting and historical snapshot of China’s semi-colonial and semi-feudal period. Given its profound cultural significance, relevant propaganda authorities have harnessed this landmark’s educational potential. In May 1997, shortly before Hong Kong's return, the Dongyang Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department first designated “Guangzhou Street” as a city-level patriotic education base. In 1998, the Jinhua propaganda department named it a “Jinhua Municipal Patriotic Education Base,” and in 2000, it earned recognition as a Zhejiang Provincial Patriotic Education Base from the Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department. By June 2003, it had been honored as the National Anti-Drug Education Base (Zhejiang) by the Office of the National Narcotics Control Commission.

Covering an area of 220,000 square meters with a built-up area of over 60,000 square meters, the base features more than 160 buildings of various Chinese and Western architectural styles that reflect the urban scenes of a specific historical era. These include: 19th-century street views of South Canton in Guangzhou, the Pearl River water surface and small urban rivers, the Thirteen Foreign Factories along the riverbank, Tianzi Wharf, the Office of the Viceroy of Liangguang, Tianlan Pavilion Teahouse, Sanwei Hall Opium Den, and other landmarks. All structures were designed and constructed based on historically verified materials. The entire scenic area bears witness to the blood-soaked history of China’s Opium War, embodying rich historical and aesthetic value. It is characterized by vivid landscapes, authentic architecture, and profound ideological messages, offering visitors an educational and inspiring experience. This makes it an ideal venue for motivating people to remember national humiliation, revitalize China, and delivering vivid patriotic education to young people.

The “Guangzhou Street Patriotic Education Base” currently features main facilities such as the National Anti-Drug Education Hall (free admission) and the Sanwei Hall Exhibition Hall. These venues make full use of modern educational methods to provide immersive and rational learning experiences. They incorporate numerous historical scenes, streets, props, artifacts, historical photos, documents, and DVDs to stage live reenactments of historical events (including performances like “Raging Seas” and “Tales of the Flying Fox”). The base actively creates opportunities and adheres to the principle of prioritizing social benefits, establishing a green channel for minors to visit and learn. Each year, the base organizes free visits for tens of thousands of students to learn about the dangers of drugs, providing convenient services for the moral education of minors. Cultivating patriotism among young people, enhancing their sense of national pride, and guiding them to establish correct ideals, beliefs, outlooks on life, and values are the primary missions of the education base.

This project contributes to maintaining social harmony and stability, as well as building a peaceful and law-based China. It plays a significant political role in promoting patriotic education, nurturing and shaping national spirit, and strengthening the love for the country and the awareness of cherishing life—especially among youth. It is a major educational and cultural initiative with deep political meaning.

The freely accessible anti-drug education base covers an area of over 20 acres, with a built-up area of 4,600 square meters and an exhibition area of 3,170 square meters. The total investment exceeds 12 million yuan. It is divided into two floors and features eight anti-drug education themes: China Says No to Drugs, Harsh Reality, The Dignity of Law, The History of Anti-Drug Efforts, International Anti-Drug Cooperation, Zhejiang’s Anti-Drug Struggle, History Will Not Forget, as well as Special Topic and Audiovisual Halls.

The anti-drug exhibition hall primarily utilizes multimedia, images, scene reconstructions, and drug models as educational tools and means of communication, effectively raising young people’s awareness of drugs. It covers major historical events in the fight against drugs from ancient times to the present, using detailed exhibits and materials to recreate scenes from the famous historical campaign led by Lin Zexu at the Humen Opium Destruction. This serves to warn young people about the dangers of drugs. Since its establishment, the hall has been highly regarded by public security leaders, educators, and youths. It informs the general public—especially young people—about the harms of drugs, rings the alarm bell to cherish life and reject drugs, and delivers positive messages to all visitors.
