The Yizheng Shendun Site is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Jiangsu Province.

Shendun Site

The Shendun Site is located 34 meters north of Residential Building No. 8 in Gaotang Group, Dingqiao Village, Chenji Town, Yizheng City, 700 meters east of the Sidai Line, and 280 meters southwest of Gaotang Ridge. Situated in the Shugang hilly area, the site lies on a terrace-like highland that slopes from north to south. It is surrounded by rivers and ponds on the north, east, and west sides. The current site covers an area of over 10,000 square meters, with the highest section on the northern side spanning approximately 1,000 square meters. Discovered in 1973, the surface and exposed sections revealed a large number of sandy red pottery pieces, geometric-patterned stoneware, black-glazed pottery, fired earth chunks, animal bones, and polished stone tools. From September to December 1995, the History Department of Nanjing University conducted an excavation here, uncovering an area of 464 square meters. They discovered a large-scale residential complex from the Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn periods built with fired earth, with rich pottery fragments and other artifacts in the strata. The upper cultural layer mainly contained sandy gray-brown pottery and clay reddish-brown pottery, while the lower cultural layer showed a significant increase in clay black-glazed pottery, with vessel shapes including tripods, dou (food containers), and jars. The Shendun Site is a rare, well-preserved settlement site from the Shang and Zhou dynasties in the Ning-Zhen area of Jiangsu and its surrounding regions. It exhibits distinct local characteristics and holds significant importance for understanding the culture of Yizheng during the Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn periods. On June 5, 2006, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage conservation units by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province.

Dingqiao Village: Dingqiao Village is located south of Chenji Town’s Shanglin Road, with the Sidai Line passing through. The village comprises 30 villager groups, with a total of 809 farming households, a population of 2,397, and a taxable cultivated area of 3,491 mu. It currently has 68 party members, including 1 probationary member. There are three township-owned enterprises and eight village enterprises. By the end of 2011, the village achieved a total output value of 44.58 million yuan across its primary, secondary, and tertiary industries, with a per capita net income of 10,906 yuan, collective disposable income of 65,000 yuan, and total liabilities of 483,000 yuan.
