Bagua Zhou is located in the Yangtze River, 4 kilometers downstream from the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, covering an area of 56 square kilometers—larger than the area within the ancient city walls of downtown Nanjing. The area is lush with vegetation, boasts a serene environment, and features an intricate network of waterways, vast fields, and the sounds of chickens and dogs echoing through the air. Focusing mainly on primary and tertiary industries, it serves as a rare “paradise” in the outskirts of Nanjing. Currently, the Qixia District and Bagua Zhou have invested over 50 million yuan to build a road network that spans the entire island. A number of tourism projects have been completed, including the Bagua Cultural Park, Bagua Zhou Holiday Resort, Nanjing Primary and Secondary School Agricultural Science Base, Farming Fun Museum, and Water Amusement Park. These attractions have drawn large numbers of urban residents, who come either in groups or with their families, to stroll along the riverbanks, paddle on the river, barbecue in the willow groves. In recent years, events such as the Beach Festival, Kite Festival, and Tent Festival have been held, offering one-day trips along the river.

The tourism planning for Bagua Zhou was led by Academician Wang Ying of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at Nanjing University, with Jeff Wall, former president of the International Tourism Society and a Canadian, serving as an advisor. The plan takes advantage of Bagua Zhou’s unique natural landforms and highlights its three major features: greenery, water, and wilderness. The island is divided into an eco-agricultural tourism zone, a headland riverscape sightseeing area, a willow grove rural resort zone, a grassland camping base, a Xiaojing River folk culture zone, and a riverside water recreation zone. The focus is on developing leisure vacation, health and entertainment, and camping & educational tourism products. This plan has become a regulatory document for the development of tourism in Bagua Zhou by Nanjing City, as well as a platform that has attracted strong interest from private investors and served as a basis for tourism investment promotion. The goal is to develop Bagua Zhou into an ecological tourism area covered in greenery, with beautiful surroundings and rich biodiversity.
