Tomb of Chen Zuolin

The Tomb of Chen Zuolin is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanjing City.

The Tomb of Chen Zuolin is located in Yongshou Ling, Maigaoqiao Subdistrict, Qixia District, dating back to 1920.

The Tomb of Chen Zuolin is located in Fentoushan Natural Village, fendou Village, Maigaoqiao Town. Originally situated behind the Gulin Hermitage on Qingliang Mountain, the tomb featured a stele inscribed with “Epitaph of Mr. Chen of Jiangning” by Chen Sanli. In 1955, due to construction needs, the tomb was moved to its current location, becoming a cemetery for the Chen family. During the Cultural Revolution, the tomb was destroyed. In 1987, the Nanjing Cultural Relics Management Committee restored the tomb, and a new stele was erected in front of it by Chen Zuolin’s great-grandson.

The tomb is circular, with two tiers made of cement and no covering. The bottom tier has a diameter of about 4.2 meters and a height of 0.55 meters, while the top tier measures approximately 2.6 meters in diameter and 0.6 meters in height. The blue stone tombstone stands 1.6 meters tall in total, with the main body measuring 1.35 meters in height, 0.52 meters in width, and 0.14 meters in thickness. The two-tier base is 0.25 meters high, 1 meter wide, and 0.5 meters thick. A retaining wall about 12 meters long and 2 meters high was built on the hillside southeast of the tomb. The tomb is currently well-preserved. In 1992, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Nanjing City.

Chen Zuolin (1837–1920), courtesy name Yusheng, art name Boyu, and later art name Keyuan, was also known as Mr. Keyuan. The Chen family had long resided in Nanjing. His great-grandfather, Chen Shou, was a student preparing for the imperial examinations, his grandfather Chen Weiyuan and granduncle Chen Weiping were both successful candidates in the same imperial examination, and his father, Chen Yuanheng, was a provincial examination graduate. Chen Zuolin began studying at the age of 4 and read history from the age of 11. He studied successively at Zhongshan Academy and Xiyin Academy. In the first year of the Guangxu reign (1875), he passed the provincial examination, but failed to succeed in the imperial examination afterward, so he gave up the imperial exams and devoted himself to education, literature, and historical studies. Maigaoqiao Subdistrict: The office of Maigaoqiao Subdistrict is located at No. 42 Changying Village. Covering an area of 13.03 square kilometers, it has a population of 39,357. It administers 12 communities: Maigaoqiao Street, Shizi Street, Huadian, Dongjing Village, Xiaozhuang, Changying Village, Jinning New Village, Xingwei, Wanshou, Nansu, Hepan, and Fendou.
