Hongze Lake Egret Nature Reserve is located in the southeast of Sihong County, within the Hongze Lake Farm. Stretching 20 kilometers in length, it covers a total area of 5.22 square kilometers. This pristine woodland attracts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds each year to breed and nest, creating a spectacular sight. The bird population mainly consists of egrets such as the little egret and the grey heron, along with other species including the great bustard, white stork, black stork, and red-crowned crane—four species under first-class national protection—as well as 26 species under second-class national protection such as swans and Eurasian sparrowhawks. This rare avian paradise has become an educational and research base for primary and secondary school students to learn about and study birds. It is also an ideal destination for people to connect with nature and enjoy its ecological beauty.
