Xiacaowan Man Site

The Xiacaowan Man Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Suqian City.

The Xiacaowan Man Site is located eight kilometers southeast of Shuang’ou Town in Sihong County. It lies to the south of the Huai River and to the east of Hongze Lake, in a hilly area between the river and lake, at an elevation of 44.4 meters. Due to its proximity to the lakeside bay and abundant aquatic grass resources, it is called “Xiacaowan.” The stratum here is referred to as the “Xiacaowan Kaolinite Stratum.” It is a typical stratum from the Miocene epoch of the geological timescale, so geological experts have collectively named similar strata the “Xiacaowan System.”

In 1954, Professor Yang Zhongjian from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a section of human femur fossil at Xiacaowan. Research confirmed it to be from a Homo sapiens of the Paleolithic Age, named Xiacaowan Man, who lived 40,000 to 50,000 years ago — the first human fossil discovered in Jiangsu Province. In 1981, archaeologists from the Nanjing Museum discovered a Paleolithic site dating back to the same period as Xiacaowan Man one kilometer southeast of Xiacaowan at Huoshiling. The site covers an area of 1,500 square meters and unearthed scrapers, pointed tools, and other artifacts.

Shuang’ou Town: In 2020, Shuang’ou Town, Sihé Township, and Fēngshān Township were merged to form the new Shuang’ou Town. The administrative region of the new town includes the former areas of Shuang’ou Town, Sihé Township, and Fēngshān Township. The town government is located in Tánnán Residents' Committee, with its office address at No. 1 Bìnmín Road, Shuānggōu Industrial Park.

The administrative area of Shuang’ou Town covers 193.51 square kilometers, with a population of 102,100, and governs 16 residents' committees and 21 village committees.
