Tomb of the Kind Woman Who Fed Han Xin

The Tomb of the Kind Woman Who Fed Han Xin is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

One of the "Three Heroes Who Established the Han Dynasty," Han Xin, was born in Matou Town, Huaiyin County. In his youth, when he was down on his luck, he once went fishing while hungry. A kind woman washing clothes by the river (known as the "漂母") provided him with food without asking for anything in return for dozens of days. Deeply grateful, Han Xin vowed that he would repay her kindness in the future. The kind woman responded unhappily, "A grown man should be able to support himself. I gave you food out of pity, not because I expected anything in return." When Han Xin achieved fame and success and was enfeoffed as the King of Chu, he returned to his fiefdom and summoned the kind woman who had fed him all those years ago, rewarding her with a thousand pieces of gold. This gave rise to the famous story of "a meal worth a thousand in gold." Legend has it that when the kind woman passed away, Han Xin was deeply saddened and ordered each of his 100,000 soldiers to bring a basket of earth to build up her tomb. The Tomb of the Kind Woman Who Fed Han Xin is one of the most famous historical and cultural sites in Huaiyin and stands as an enduring cultural monument on the land of Huaiyin.

On October 22, 2002, the Tomb of the Kind Woman Who Fed Han Xin was designated as part of the fifth group of cultural relic protection units of Jiangsu Province.

Matou Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Huaiyin County. It was established as Matou Township in 1957, reorganized as a commune in 1958, reinstated as a township in 1983, and upgraded to a town in 1987. Located in the southwestern part of the county, it is 12 kilometers from the county seat. The town covers an area of 33 square kilometers and has a population of 25,000. The Grand Canal, Zhangfu River, and the Old Yellow River run parallel from west to east through the area. It administers 14 village committees including Matou, Erzha, Taishan, Taoyuan, Zhengtai, Zhangzhuangzhen, Yuba, Taiping, Xinhe, Dagou, Zhongma, Huimin, Taozha, and Jiuxian, as well as one residential committee in Matou. The local economy is primarily agricultural, with planting as the main focus. The area is known for its specialty dish, soup-flavored lamb.
