CaoYankou Tomb Cluster

The CaoYankou Tomb Cluster is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

The CaoYankou Han Tomb Cluster is currently the largest discovered group of Han Dynasty tombs within Yancheng City. It is located between Fengning Village and Yongning Village in CaoYankou Town, Jianhu County, stretching approximately 5 kilometers from north to south and about 1 kilometer from east to west. There are a total of nine earthen mounds, each covering an area between 1,000 and 3,000 square meters. In 1980, during the construction of water conservancy projects, the first ancient Han tomb was discovered at the high mound north of Yangqiao in Fengning Village. Artifacts unearthed included jade bi disks, jade pendants, bronze mirrors, Han Dynasty wuzhu coins, iron swords, wooden figurines, glazed pottery ewers, and gray pottery jars. Research indicates that these Han tombs date from the early Western Han to the Eastern Han period. The unearthed artifacts are exquisitely crafted, richly illustrated, and vividly detailed. Notably, the appearance and use of colored glazes, as well as the depiction of various rare birds and animals, reflect the richness of Han Dynasty culture in China.

On October 22, 2002, the CaoYankou Tomb Cluster was designated as part of the fifth batch of Protected Cultural Heritage Sites of Jiangsu Province.

CaoYankou Community: CaoYankou Town is located in the northeast of Jianhu County, about 25.4 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Funing County to the north and the Tongyu River to the east. National Highway 204 and the Chuanchang River run through the town, covering a total area of 60.9 square kilometers with a population of 36,200. The town administers nine administrative villages and one neighborhood committee. In 2003, the town achieved a gross domestic product of 200.3 million yuan, fiscal revenue of 6.1 million yuan, and an average per capita rural income of 3,910 yuan.
