Former Residence of Qiao Guanhua The world-renowned diplomat Qiao Guanhua (1913–1983) was originally from Dongqiaozhuang Village in Jianhu County, Jiangsu Province. His father, Qiao Shouheng, inherited the family tradition and was skilled in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and music, as well as board and card games. He was a strict educator. Qiao Guanhua started school at the age of five, beginning his early immersion in classical literature. At 16, he was admitted to the Philosophy Department of Tsinghua University, where he was the youngest student in his class. During his time at Tsinghua, Qiao Guanhua began to study the works of Marxism and actively participated in progressive activities led by the underground Communist Party, becoming one of the representatives of the leftist students. After the founding of New China, Qiao Guanhua served successively as Director of the International News Bureau of the People's Republic of China, Deputy Director of the Policy Research Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (with Zhou Enlai as Director), Director of the Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Qiao Guanhua made significant contributions to China’s diplomatic endeavors throughout his life. In September 1983, he passed away in Beijing at the age of 70 due to illness. The former residence of Qiao Guanhua is located in Dongqiaozhuang, Dongqiao Village, Qingfeng Town, Jianhu County. In 1984, the Qingfeng Town government renovated the site, and Cao Xingfu, then Secretary of the Yancheng Municipal Party Committee, inscribed the nameplate for the residence. In 1997, the Qingfeng Town government sent personnel to Beijing to retrieve items used by Comrade Qiao Guanhua during his lifetime—including his office desk, wardrobe, sofa, and manuscripts—and arranged them for display inside the residence for public viewing.
