The Tangzha Red Mansion is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The Tangzha Red Mansion

The mansion is situated at the site of the Jianghai Hotel beneath the Dayang Bridge on the eastern side of the Tangzha River and was built in 1919. The main building faces the river to the west, and is accompanied by a two-story Western-style annex with a gently sloped brick-concrete structure. The annex is connected to the main building via a skybridge, forming an upscale garden villa in the elegant European classical style.

As an important component of China’s modern industrial heritage from the era of Zhang Jian, the classic charm of the Red Mansion highlights Mr. Zhang Jian’s vision of blending Chinese and Western elements: its blue bricks, red tiles, sloped roof, and rustic wooden windows on all four sides all reflect this. It is now a cultural relic protection unit of Nantong City.

In March 2019, the Tangzha Red Mansion was included in the eighth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.
