Zhuanghang Old Street

Zhuanghang Old Street is over 1,000 meters long and was first formed more than 600 years ago. It is a well-preserved Ming and Qing architectural street in Fengxian District that embodies the charm of the Jiangnan water town. The Nanqiaotang canal beside the old street was dug during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. Except for a section in the middle that is intersected by a new street, the old street remains largely intact. Major buildings on the street include the former residence of the Wang family on East Street, the residence of Li Xueting, the former site of Chujing Temple, the ancient house of the Diao family in Youche Lane, the residence of He Liuqi in Huntang Lane, and the Wang family residence. The city river features historic bridges such as Yuxiu Bridge and Bazizi Bridge.

In order to promote and preserve historical culture, Fengxian District undertook the restoration of Zhuanghang Old Street as a key government project. With an investment of 15 million yuan, comprehensive renovation of the old street began in September 2007, starting with the first phase of 130 meters. The exterior was maintained in its original restored state, while modern water, electricity, and communication facilities were newly installed inside, giving the area a completely renewed look.

Today, the old street is quiet and peaceful, resembling a traditional painting of Jiangnan life.
