Monument to Martyr Li Zhuyi

The Monument to Martyr Li Zhuyi serves as a patriotic education base.

Li Zhuyi, born in 1892, was a native of Hongmiao in today’s Fengxian District, Shanghai. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1925. In the autumn of 1927, he co-founded Shuguang Middle School in Fengcheng with comrades such as Liu Xiao; the school became the birthplace of the CPC Fengxian County Committee. In the spring of 1928, he was arrested by the reactionary Kuomintang and was martyred heroically on June 21 of the same year at the age of 37.

In 1956, Shuguang Middle School reopened. In May 1957, in accordance with the martyr’s last wishes, construction of the Monument to Martyr Li Zhuyi began on the school campus. It was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution by followers of the “-”. In January 1980, the monument was rebuilt, inscribed with words from Wu Zhongchao, then director of the Palace Museum in Beijing: “Martyr Li Zhuyi Lives Forever,” “Died a Worthy Death,” and “Respectfully Inscribed by Wu Zhongchao.” The central part of the base features an inscription. On November 28, 1983, the Fengxian County People’s Government designated the Monument to Martyr Li Zhuyi as a county-level protected cultural relic. On May 20, 1988, it was further approved as a “Fengxian County Key Martyrs’ Memorial Building Protection Unit.” On September 29, 1995, the monument was recognized by the Fengxian County People’s Government as a county-level “Patriotic Education Base,” and a grand plaque presentation ceremony was held at Shuguang Middle School. In September 2011, Shuguang Middle School relocated to a modern new campus on Guangxue Road (provisional name) in Fengcheng Town, and this “Patriotic Education Base” moved along with it. A dedicated 15-mu area within the campus was allocated for the Li Zhuyi Martyr Memorial Hall and Memorial Square, and the original monument was replaced with a more vivid and approachable statue of the martyr.

Li Zhuyi (1892–1928)

Li Zhuyi, originally named Li Xianzhang and also known as Li Gao, was a native of Lao Lijia Dai in Hongmiao, Fengcheng, and came from a landlord family.

In his childhood, he completed private schooling and primary education in his hometown before attending the affiliated middle school of Shanghai Tongji Medical and Engineering College (predecessor of Tongji University) (some sources say Nanyang Public School). After graduation, he returned to his hometown to engage in education and once served as principal of Jingcheng Primary School (now Jicheng Primary School). After the Xinhai Revolution, Li embraced democratic ideals, joined the Chinese Nationalist Party led by Sun Yat-sen, and wrote poems criticizing the warlord conflicts.
