Huating Dongshitang is located on the south side of Fengzhe Highway along the northern shore of Hangzhou Bay. It is the eastern section of the original stone seawall within Huating County, hence the name “Huating Dongshitang.” On April 27, 2002, it was approved by the municipal government as a “Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.” The seawall construction began in the third year of the Yongzheng reign during the Qing Dynasty and was completed in the thirteenth year. In 1996, during the slope reduction work on the Fengzhe Highway section in Zhelin, the stone seawall, which had been buried under an earthen embankment for over two hundred years, was unearthed. The wall is entirely built with slabs of bluestone and granite, with iron dowels and clamps connecting the stones, and lime-sand mortar filling the joints. It features inscribed stelae such as “Stands Firm as a Golden Fortress,” “Lasting Peace for All Generations,” “River Mouth Boundary Marker,” “Long-lasting Calm,” “Tranquil Sea and Clear River,” and “Protect the Farmlands.” The exposed section of the seawall stretches 4.5 kilometers from the Zhulin town area in the east to Fenghai Village in the west, with a base width of 3 meters, a top width of 1.5 meters, and a height of 2.5 meters above ground. Its majestic presence makes it the most grandiose and imposing ancient structure in the suburbs of Shanghai, earning nicknames such as the “Forty-Li Golden City” and “Shanghai’s Little Great Wall.” Today, Huating Dongshitang no longer serves its original flood-prevention function, but the indomitable spirit of our ancestors in resisting natural disasters continues to inspire future generations.
