Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Memorial Park

The Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Memorial Park is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

The Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Memorial Park is located in the core area of the Sun Island Scenic Zone, covering an area of 3.6 hectares with a total investment of over 3 million yuan. The park was designed by authoritative domestic experts. It has now become the largest anti-Japanese education and memorial base in Northeast China. With a central scenic area featuring a group sculpture of anti-Japanese soldiers, a lake, and green grass, its content differs from the previously solemn and serious memorial style. The overall tone is set against undulating terrain, towering trees, and meandering streams, symbolizing the battlefield of the anti-Japanese struggle across the Black Dragon River and White Mountains. Under the blue sky, the thematic sculpture, anti-Japanese camps, and massive rocks form a historical tableau of the lives and battles of the Anti-Japanese United Army.

The entire memorial park is situated along the embankment and close to water. A 60-meter-long giant relief symbolizes the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression; the 14 pine trees in the relief represent the 14 years of arduous resistance by the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army against Japanese invaders; the group of anti-Japanese soldiers and 11 horses in the grass symbolize the 11 armies of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army; and the inscription in the park records the glorious history of the unit’s grueling and bloody fight.

The Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army was a heroic force under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. Its predecessors were remnants of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army, the Northeast Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces, and the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army. It was a crucial component of the great national liberation war in which the Chinese people resisted Japanese imperialist aggression during the 1930s and 1940s, making indelible and great contributions in China’s revolutionary history. Operating deep in the rear of the Japanese invaders, their 14 years of hard struggle pinned down hundreds of thousands of Japanese and puppet regular troops, strongly supporting the nationwide war of resistance. Their moving, brave, and fearless spirit of sacrifice is a concentrated embodiment of the Chinese nation's unyielding determination to fight for independence.

After its establishment, the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army struck powerful blows against Japanese invaders and shook the occupiers' rear areas. As a result, the Japanese were forced to deploy large numbers of troops for repeated frenzied “punitive expeditions” and implemented the “Three-Year Public Order Suppression Plan.” Coupled with the loss of contact between the Anti-Japanese United Army and the higher-level Party organizations, the destruction of local Party organizations, and the near-total loss of mountain strongholds, supplies such as food, medicine, and salt were completely cut off. Many outstanding officers and soldiers died heroically, and the army suffered heavy losses. From 1939 to 1940, the guerrilla warfare of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army entered an extremely difficult stage. However, the will of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army was not broken. The army was reorganized into smaller units, engaging in small-scale guerrilla warfare, preserving a core of elite forces, and retreating into Soviet territory for reorganization and training. During their time in the Soviet Union, they continuously sent small units back into Chinese anti-Japanese guerrilla zones to carry out operations, until August 1945 when they cooperated with the Soviet Army to re-enter the Northeast, playing a significant role in the liberation of the region.
