Harbin University of Commerce Museum of Currency and Finance

The Harbin University of Commerce Museum of Currency and Finance was established in 1996 as the first specialized numismatic exhibition hall in a Chinese university at that time.

With over 6,000 exhibits in total, the museum displays a wide range of currency, bills, securities, and financial historical materials from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods to the People’s Republic of China. These are categorized into seven sections: Ancient Chinese Metal Currency, Ancient Chinese Paper Currency and Securities, Currency and Securities Issued by Imperialist Powers in China, Local Paper Money and Certificates of Heilongjiang, People’s Currency and Securities, Historical Materials and Donated Items on Currency and Finance.

Among the seven major sections totaling more than 6,000 exhibits, the section on “Currency and Securities Issued by Imperialist Powers in China” stands out for its rarity, systematic organization, and comprehensiveness. In particular, the subsections “Currency and Securities of the Japanese Puppet Regime” and “Russian Ruble Notes (Qiang Tie)” are noted for their complete varieties, well-matched series, and exceptional rarity—forming unique regional features of the museum. These have earned high praise from many renowned experts and scholars, making the museum an important base for the study of local monetary and financial history, numismatics, and patriotic education. Professor Wang Luolin, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, remarked after visiting the Japanese Puppet Currency and Securities section: “This collection is even more comprehensive and systematic than that of Japan’s Currency Museum!”
