Following the Qunli National Urban Wetland Park, Sun Island National Wetland Park, and Baiyupao National Wetland Park, Harbin’s urban area and surrounding regions will have a fourth national-level wetland park — Heilongjiang Songbei National Wetland Park. According to the city forestry bureau, the provincial forestry department and the national wetland management center have in principle agreed to establish the park. It is currently undergoing application procedures in accordance with relevant regulations, and is expected to open to the public in August. The park, along with nearby vineyards and agricultural picking gardens, will become a new destination for suburban outings.

Songbei National Wetland Park is located within the National Forestry Science and Technology Demonstration Park, east of Huajia Village, Wanbao Town, Songbei District. Covering an area of 51.2 hectares, 32.9 hectares of which are wetlands. While preserving original vegetation such as reeds and cattails, the park has introduced over 30 species of woody plants including mountain ash, Manchurian lilac, and Manchurian ash, totaling more than 20,000 plants. It also added over 20 types of submerged and floating aquatic plants like carex, reed-mace, and lotus. Additionally, more than 200,000 fish and amphibians, including crucian carp, common carp, and forest frogs, have been released.

Songbei National Wetland Park is a man-made wetland landscape in China’s cold northern region, situated along the eastern migratory route of migratory birds. During migration seasons, flocks of ducks and geese, along with cranes and herons soaring together, create a delightful bird-watching scene. In summer, lakeside shrubs and fish in the water attract birds such as herons and wild ducks to nest and breed. Currently, with the restoration of the native wetland ecosystem, the park is home to over 20 species of birds including Eurasian coots, Eurasian jays, and spot-billed ducks. The park features a beautiful landscape of wooded grasslands, lakes and streams, wetland vistas, and rare flowers and plants, making it an ideal place for residents to connect with nature. Harbin now has nine national-level wetland parks and one provincial-level wetland park.
