General Shou’s Shrine

General Shou’s Shrine is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Heilongjiang Province.

General Shou’s Shrine, also known as General Shoushan’s Shrine, is located in Longsha Park in Qiqihar City. It was built in 1926 to commemorate General Shoushan, a patriotic military leader of the late Qing Dynasty. The three-courtyard complex consists of a mountain gate, front hall, rear hall, and east and west wing rooms, covering an area of 1,650 square meters. Shoushan (1860–1900), surname Yuan and courtesy name Meifeng, was a descendant of Yuan Chonghuan, the Ming Dynasty Minister of War, and was born in Aihui. During the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894, General Shoushan fought bravely against the enemy and repeatedly achieved meritorious service. In the 23rd year of the Guangxu reign (1897), he was appointed as the commander of the border defense forces stationed in Aihui. The following year, when Tsarist Russia invaded China’s Sixty-Four Villages East of the River, Shoushan sent troops to protect the banner villages. In the 25th year of Guangxu, he was promoted to the deputy military governor of Aihui, and in the 26th year, the Qing government appointed him acting Governor-General of Heilongjiang. In July of the same year, Tsarist Russia launched an attack on China with over 100,000 troops. General Shoushan valiantly resisted and ultimately died in the line of duty. It is now a provincially designated key cultural relic protection unit. The shrine has been fully renovated, and the original “Martyrdom Stele of Meifeng” has been re-erected inside the shrine.
