The College of Life Science and Engineering at Qiqihar University has over 30 years of educational history, profound cultural foundation, rich teaching experience, a strong dedication to educating talent, and an atmosphere of steady accumulation leading to remarkable achievements. Through persistent effort, the college has evolved into a teaching and research base covering science, engineering, and agriculture, gaining considerable influence both within and beyond the province. It has gradually become a hub for life science education and research in Northeast China, playing a significant role in promoting local economic development and scientific advancement.

College Overview

The college offers a comprehensive range of disciplines. It currently houses three departments: Biological Science and Technology, Food and Bioengineering, and Horticulture and Landscape Gardening. These departments oversee seven undergraduate majors: Biological Science, Biological Engineering, Biotechnology, Food Science and Engineering, Food Quality and Safety, Landscape Gardening, and Horticulture. Among them, the Biological Science major is a provincially key specialty, while Biological Engineering, Biotechnology, and Food Science and Engineering are university-level key specialties. There are also three master's degree programs at the secondary discipline level: Genetics, Botany, and Agricultural Product Processing and Storage Engineering. Genetics is recognized as a provincially key discipline, and the Agricultural Product Processing Laboratory is a provincially key laboratory. Additionally, there is one provincially grain, oil, and food processing talent training center, one provincially biological experimental teaching demonstration center, and one provincial youth science education base.

Faculty

The college boasts a strong faculty with outstanding teaching achievements. It currently has 86 full-time teachers, including 14 professors, 24 associate professors, 15 doctoral and master’s supervisors, and 70 teachers with master’s or doctoral degrees. Several faculty members have been honored as National Outstanding Teachers, National Role Models for Teachers’ Ethics, Experts Enjoying Special Government Allowances, Council Members of Provincial Academic Societies, and Distinguished Teachers at the university level.

Teaching and Research

Faculty consistently engage in teaching research and reform, achieving notable results. There are currently 26 teaching and research projects. The college has won three first prizes and five second prizes for provincial-level teaching achievement awards, as well as five university-level teaching reform achievement awards. Two courses—Biochemical Engineering and Human & Animal Physiology—are recognized as provincially excellent courses, while four others—Food Technology Principles, Biochemistry, Plant Physiology, and Food Machinery and Equipment—are university-level excellent courses. There are also seven university-level quality courses and six university-level key construction courses.

The college demonstrates strong research capabilities and a vibrant academic atmosphere. Currently, it undertakes one project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one sub-project under the National 863 Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, one sub-project of an international cooperation initiative, ten provincial/ministerial-level research projects, and thirty-three prefecture/ministry-level research initiatives. In the past three years, it has published over 256 national and provincial-level papers, including 15 indexed in SCI and over 100 in core journals.

The college is equipped with advanced teaching facilities and complete hardware infrastructure. It currently operates 67 laboratories, including one provincially key laboratory and one provincially biological teaching experiment center, ensuring comprehensive teaching and research conditions.

The college emphasizes the cultivation of students' foundational knowledge and practical skills, strengthens interdisciplinary integration, and encourages student participation in open laboratories. It values basic knowledge and professional competencies, focuses on practical teaching components, and ensures solid training in fundamentals. With strict teaching management, the college continuously improves teaching quality. Over the years, it has gradually developed distinctive educational features: advancing teaching through research to promote program development; enhancing innovation through experiments to cultivate practical ability; and fostering comprehensive professionals through industry-academia-research collaborations.

The college has long admitted undergraduates from both coastal and inland provinces, implementing segmented training and tiered instruction tailored to students of varying levels. It strengthens the training of fundamental skills and cultivates talent urgently needed by society. Graduates possess solid foundational knowledge, broad expertise, strong basic and practical skills, high innovation, adaptability, and plasticity, along with a wide range of employment prospects. Many graduates have become experts and leaders in their fields, such as Ma Keping, Director of the Institute of Botany at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Shi Fuchen, Doctoral Supervisor at Nankai University; and Yan Lijun, a Cambridge University Ph.D., among many other distinguished professionals in the field of biology who enjoy high reputations nationally. Others, including Wang Baishun, Beijing Sales Manager of Yanjing Beer Factory; Wei Xiaokun, Branch Factory Manager of Bright Dairy Group; and Lin Peiqing, Branch Factory Director of Hebei Xiaoyangren Dairy Group—all alumni of the college—have made meaningful contributions to local economic development and earned the college an excellent social reputation.
