Chona River
Chona River is a national nature reserve.
Heilongjiang Chona River National Nature Reserve borders the eastern edge of the Greater Khingan Mountains and adjoins the temperate mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests of the Lesser Khingan Mountains. To the north lies the Xinglong Forest Farm of the Hanjiayuan Forestry Bureau, to the southeast the Gulugan Forest Farm, and to the southwest it connects with the Galaha Forest Farm. To the west, it neighbors part of the former Chona River Forest Farm under the Hanjiayuan Forestry Bureau. The geographical coordinates are between 51°44′24″N and 51°19′00″N, and 125°41′03″E and 126°18′12″E.
The Chona River Nature Reserve features low mountain and hilly terrain, predominantly hilly, with gentle undulations. The land slopes gradually from west to east with mostly mild slopes. The highest elevation in the area is 605 meters, the lowest is 238 meters, and the average elevation is 421 meters.
The geological characteristics of the Chona River Nature Reserve are marked by widespread igneous rocks in the bedrock. The area is mainly composed of granite, followed by basalt and andesite, while sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are sparsely distributed in localized regions.
The Chona River Nature Reserve is located in the cold temperate zone and has a cold temperate continental monsoon climate. In winter, influenced by the cold Siberian air currents, it becomes extremely cold. However, due to the warm air masses moving up along the Heilongjiang River, it is warmer and more humid compared to the northern and western parts of the Greater Khingan Mountains.
The average annual precipitation in the Chona River basin is about 478 mm. Precipitation is unevenly distributed throughout the seasons, with most falling between July and August, accounting for roughly half of the annual total.
The main rivers within the reserve include the Chona River, which originates from the northern slope of the Yilehuli Mountains and flows from west to east into the Huma River, running approximately 25 km within the reserve. The Qingshui River is a major tributary of the Chona River, flowing about 18 km from the northwest to the southeast before joining the Chona River. The Kongnianzi River and Dongwulu River are two other tributaries, with the Kongnianzi River stretching about 13 km and the Dongwulu River about 16 km. Both flow from the southwest to the northeast into the Chona River.
Another river in the Chona River region is the Gulugan River, whose main course runs 48 km within the reserve and has over ten tributaries of various sizes. These tributaries are significantly affected by rainfall—during the rainy season from July to August, when precipitation is heavy, water flow increases; during drier periods, the flow decreases, and some may even dry up. The well-defined river channels form extensive wetland landscapes.
