The Monument to Liu Gong’s Resistance Against Russia is located on the western hill of Shajiajie Village, Wudao Gou Town, 30 kilometers south of Liuhe County. Its geographical coordinates are 125°52′ east longitude and 42°08′ north latitude, about 1.5 kilometers from Shajiajie Village. In March 1987, the People’s Government of Liuhe County designated it as a county-level key cultural relic protection site and subsequently re-erected the monument. It was damaged by a mountain flood in 1995 and re-erected again in 1996. In the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927, Year of Dingmao), Liu Yuxiang, the grandson of Liu Kuan, served as a patrol officer in Erdaogou, the Third District of Liuhe. He recounted the story to his friend Lian Yinglou, who then composed the inscription for the monument. The monument stands 1.8 meters tall, 0.60 meters wide, and 0.33 meters thick. The inscribed text is clear, carved in intaglio with the regular script style of Zhao Mengfu, written and engraved with exceptional skill. It consists of 18 lines and 629 characters. Liu Kuan came from a prominent family and moved to Boyagou in Liuhe County in the early years of the Guangxu reign. During the Russo-Japanese War, he personally witnessed the brutal acts of Russian troops harassing fellow Chinese, which filled him with righteous indignation. He called on local villagers to resist and prepared firelocks and broadswords for battle. One day, when Russian troops raided the village, Liu Kuan charged into their ranks with a sword, severely injuring and repelling them. Soon after, a larger force of Russian soldiers attacked, but Liu courageously fought back with his firelock without fear, injuring several enemies. Ultimately, outnumbered, he was seriously wounded and sacrificed his life at the age of 63 that year. The Monument to Liu Gong’s Resistance Against Russia vividly and concretely reflects the immense suffering brought upon the Chinese people by the Russo-Japanese War and the heroic resistance efforts of the populace. It serves as a tangible historical record of Liuhe people’s struggle against foreign aggression and is an excellent local educational resource for patriotic education.
