Hongshi Lake Scenic Area

Hongshi Lake Scenic Area is located at the foot of the Changbai Mountains, in the Hongshilazi Town area of Huadian City, on the upper reaches of the Songhua River. The main tourist attractions are the “Two Lakes, One Island, and One Scenic Route”:

(1) Hongshi Lake, which is 2 kilometers from the town center and situated on the dam of the Hongshi Hydropower Station. It stretches 38 kilometers in length, with high mountains and dense forests along the western bank. Nearby, there are the Chicken Comb Lazi Peak, in the middle distance the Camel Lazi Peak, and in the far distance the Screen Wall Peak, among other natural sights. The lake covers an area of 203 hectares and remains rippling with blue waves all year round. In winter, white mist rises from the lake surface.

(2) Gaoxing Lake, located in the northeastern part of the upper reaches of Hongshi Lake, has a water area of 75 hectares, a maximum depth of 32 meters, and an average depth of 7.8 meters. The lake contains Guaxiang Island, with Dragon Maiden Peak to the east and Tiger Cave halfway up the western hillside. Legend has it that Emperor Qianlong, during his incognito inspection, bestowed the title “Copper Banks and Iron Bottom” upon the Songhua River and named the western mountain Chicken Comb Lazi Peak. Anti-Japanese hero Yang Jingyu once led troops to ambush and eliminate a number of Japanese invaders beneath Chicken Comb Lazi Peak.

(3) Jiangxin Island, located 400 meters downstream from the Songhua River Bridge, is 500 meters long and 100 meters wide during the water storage period, covering an area of 50,000 square meters; during the dry season, it is 1

000 meters long and 150 meters wide, covering an area of 150,000 square meters. The island features fertile soil and lush green trees.

(4) The Hongshi Rime Scenic Route: In the depths of winter, water vapor condenses on the trees along both banks, forming a spectacular silver-clad rime wonderland.

Mountain attractions include Chicken Comb Lazi Peak, Screen Wall Peak, Dragon Maiden Peak, Buckwheat Maiden Peak, Coffin Lazi Peak, and Lone Dragon Peak; unique landforms include Taoist Cave, Tiger Cave, Guaxiang Island, Jiangxin Island, and Dripping Rock; legends about Chicken Comb Lazi Peak, Dragon Maiden Peak, and Taoist Cave are widely spread among the people; rare animals include lynxes and musk deer; notable ancient trees mainly consist of Lone Beauty Pine and Coiling Dragon Pine; local cuisine and shopping include the “Three Flowers and One Island,” namely Lotus Fish, Bream Fish, Mandarin Fish, and Island Fish—these are all unpolluted, delicious-quality fish. Additionally, there are Manchu and Korean ethnic culture parks, as well as the former site of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army's Haogzi Lake Secret Camp, the battle sites of Hongshi Lake and Gaoxing Lake Liushuzi River, the Quliu Valley Secret Camp Site, the Hongshilazi Battle Site, the Yalugou Battle Site, the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Xiaoliushuzi Battle Site, and the Dalazi Battle Site, among other red memorial locations. It combines beautiful mountain landscapes, diverse water features, lush forest vegetation, a long history and culture, and rich ethnic customs.

Hongshi Lake Scenic Area was established in July 1997. A cumulative investment of 2.2 million yuan was made to build the “Summer Resort” and purchase outboard motorboats;

In June 2000, the Gaoxing Lake area was officially developed, with an investment of 2.3 million yuan used to construct a 340-square-meter hotel and parking lot, as well as to purchase small motorboats.

Hongshilazi Town: Huadian City’s Hongshilazi Town, commonly referred to as Hongshi Town, is located in the southeastern mountainous region of Jilin City. It is a developing small town on the Songhua River at the foot of the Changbai Mountains. The town covers a total area of 1,298.8 square kilometers, governs 15 villages, 77 villager groups, and 3 communities. Its population is 60,545, including 20,462 rural residents and 40,083 urban residents, achieving an urbanization rate of 66.2%.
